Your university has a Screenrights TV and Radio Licence, which allows you to copy
programmes from television and radio for use in teaching and research. You can also
download audiovisual material and some radio programmes legally made available online,
such as podcasts and vodcasts of programmes. This information sheet lets you know what
you are permitted to do under this licence.
What can I do with a
Screenrights licence?

technologies such as Clickview,

Under a Screenrights licence you
are NOT permitted to copy
Material purchased or hired from a
commercial supplier (for example
commercial DVDs or electronic databases).
If you wish to copy this material you should
seek advice from your copyright officer.
Do we need to label copies made
under the licence?
Every copy made under the licence must
be labelled with the following information:
Made for [name of university]’s
educational purposes
Title of programme
Date copy was made
This label should be placed on each copy
made under the Screenrights licence. If
it is a digital copy, the information on the
label should be embedded in the copy.
When do we need to keep records of
the copies made?
The licence works on a sampling system
designed to provide information to enable
Screenrights to make payments to rights
holders for copies made under the licence.
This means that universities only need to keep
records of copying during occasional surveys.

The survey, which is developed and
administered by an independent survey
authority in conjunction with Screenrights
and the New Zealand Vice Chancellors’
Committee, provides Screenrights with
records of copying practices in institutions
across New Zealand and thereby reduces
the administrative burden on individual
universities and staff. If your university
is selected to be surveyed, you will be
notified and relevant staff will be given
training prior to the survey.
What happens to the licence
fees we pay?
Who are Screenrights?
Visit www.screenrights.org or email your
questions to [email protected]
Screenrights is a non-profit copyright
society representing copyright owners in
film, television and radio. Screenrights
licenses schools and tertiary institutions
in New Zealand to copy television and
radio programmes. Screenrights collects
the licence fees and after deducting
their overheads distributes the balance
to the rights owners of the programmes
copied, as revealed by the survey. In this
way, those copyright owners producing
programmes of relevance to the university
sector will be remunerated for the use of
their works.
Screenrights distributes the money
collected from Universities to the copyright
owners (producers, writers, music and other
copyright owners) in the programmes that
are recorded. This is done on a non-profit
basis with all money distributed after the
deduction of administrative overheads only.
