For Release: Immediate Contact: Scott Stoffel (541) 947-6122 National Public Lands Day at Historic Lake County Site Lakeview, Ore. -- The Fremont-Winema National Forest and Lakeview District Bureau of Land Management (BLM) are seeking volunteers for the 22nd annual National Public Lands Day event on Saturday, September 26! This year’s National Public Lands Day event will involve multiple restoration projects at the Mitchell Monument, the only site in the continental U.S. where death resulted from enemy action during World War II (Air Crash Museum) Workers are needed to construct a trail, remove grass and weeds, plant trees, pile tree debris, and perform general ground maintenance tasks. Participants from Lakeview will meet at the Lakeview Interagency Office, 1301 South G Street, at 7:15 a.m. on the morning of the event to be transported to the worksite. Participants from Bly and its surrounding area will meet at the Bly Ranger District, 61100 Highway 140 E, at 8 a.m. Following informational and safety briefings at the project area, volunteers will perform assigned tasks at various locations. The group will reassemble at 12:30 p.m. and be treated to a free lunch. The event will conclude with each participant receiving a complimentary National Public Lands Day t-shirt and a “fee-free” coupon good throughout the next year for admittance to one recreation site managed by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, BLM, or U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Volunteers should bring sweatshirt or medium weight jacket, layered shirts, long pants, sturdy shoes, and a hat with brim. Optional items include insect repellant, sunscreen, lip balm, sunglasses, and bandanna. Drinking water will be provided.
