Safety Improvements for Row River National Recreation Trail
(Eugene, OR) Visitors to the Row River National Recreation Trail should expect reroutes and short,
temporary closures up to 5 days this spring and summer for safety improvements to the Row River Trail.
One section of the trail is being realigned and a new undercrossing is being constructed to improve safety
at locations where the trail crosses Lane County roads. Construction will begin in late April and run
through early October.
Reconstruction of the trail will occur at two crossings, and will include construction of a perpendicular
undercrossing at milepost (MP) 4.0 of Row River Road and realignment of the trail (at-grade) at the trail
crossing at MP 5.4 of Row River Road. Signage, striping, and lighting improvements will be made at
these crossings as well. Detours and any temporary closures will be posted along the trail.
“This work reflects the valuable public input that was incorporated into the Row River Corridor Plan to
address trail and road user safety improvements needed at locations where the trail crosses Lane County
roads,” said Lydia McKinney, Transportation Planning Supervisor for Lane County Public Works.
“We appreciate the community’s patience as these improvements are made to enhance the recreational
opportunities along the trail.”
Efforts will be made to minimize construction related impacts to upcoming events, including the Bikes to
Blooms Wildflower Tour on May 9th, the Gran Fondo on May 31st, and Cycle the Lakes Bike Ride on
September 19th.
A Federal Lands Access Program grant was awarded in 2013 to fund the project. Construction will be
managed and overseen by Lane County’s Engineering and Construction Staff.
The Row River Trail begins at the City of Cottage Grove’s Trailhead Park and meanders for 15.6 miles
along the Row River and Dorena Reservoir to the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Culp Creek
Trailhead, with several other trailheads along the route that provide access points. The trail is popular
among hikers, bicyclists and equestrians.
The Row River National Recreation Trail is managed in partnership by the BLM Eugene District, US
Forest Service Umpqua National Forest, Lane County Parks, Oregon State Parks and Recreation
Department, US Army Corps of Engineers, Cottage Grove Chamber of Commerce, City of Oakridge, and
Adopt-a-Trail Volunteers.
For additional information please contact, Jim Steers, Lane County Project Manager at (541)682-6929 or
Liz Aleman, BLM Eugene District at (541)683-6981 or [email protected].
###
An undercrossing will be constructed where the Row River Trail crosses a Lane County Road at milepost
4.0 to improve safety for trail users (intersection shown in both photos).
The BLM manages more than 245 million acres of public land, the most of any Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily
located in 12 Western states, including Alaska. The BLM also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s mission is
to manage and conserve the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations under our mandate of multiple-use and sustained yield. In
fiscal Year, 2013, the BLM generated $4.7 billion in receipts from public lands.
