BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT OR-10-01 For Release: September 28, 2011 Contact: Jennifer O’Leary (503) 298-8190 National Public Lands Day Event - Opportunity to Help Improve a Popular OHV Area Eugene, Ore. – The Bureau of Land Management’s Eugene District is seeking volunteers to help with National Public Lands Day activities at the Cascade View Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Complex, located in the Shotgun Creek area east of Springfield. The event will take place on Saturday, October 15, 2011 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Signs will be posted from the intersection of Marcola Road and Shotgun Creek Road to the project site. Event organizers welcome volunteers of all ages from the Eugene/Springfield area and nearby communities. The BLM will provide lunch and souvenir t-shirts. National Public Lands Day fee-free vouchers will also be provided to the first 50 participants. Volunteers will have an opportunity to help build fences, maintain and construct trails, and remove invasive plants at the Cascade View OHV Complex, a new facility developed as part of the Shotgun OHV Trail System. Major building and expansion efforts are underway in the popular OHV area to protect the environment and enhance the quality of the trail system. The 38-mile trail system features various materials including geotextiles to help prevent the trails from degrading and reduce soil erosion. The improved trail system is designed to offer challenges to all levels of riders while lessening the odds that riders will leave the course to blaze unlawful trails, which can damage ecosystems and create trespassing issues for private landowners nearby. Facility improvements at the new OHV Complex will include a parking area, tables, sanitation facilities, a training site, and a beginners’ riding loop, which will support new State requirements that require a hands-on training component for riders below the age of 16 beginning January 2012. For more information and to RSVP, please contact Liz Aleman at (541)683-7578 or the Bureau of Land Management Eugene District front desk at (541)683-6600. About the BLM: The BLM manages more land – 253 million surface acres – than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multiple-use mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands. ### -2 15 Sh e re -2 5 kR 15-2-26.2 otg un C 15 -2 Ë 1 6. -2 15-2-26.9 d Do 15 llar -1 R -3 d 1 5 Shotgun Creek Sh ot gu n 16 C -1 ree -5 k Rd Rd 15-1-32 Rd Recreation Site ola 15-225.1 Ma rc Project Area co µ 0 0.25 16-1-8 (Shotgun OHV Trail System) October 15, 2011 County Road Rocked Road 0.5 1 Paved Road Dirt Road 1.5 2 Miles To Marcola (3 miles) Springfield (17 miles) M ar la BLM - Eugene District Cascade View OHV Complex 16-1-5.3
