Pilot Project Overview Handout

Coos Bay Wagon Road Pilot Project
The Coos Bay Wagon Road (CBWR) pilot project is a cooperative
effort between the Coquille Indian Tribe and the Coos Bay District
of the Bureau of Land Management. The objective of the project
is to apply the ecological principles suggested by Professor’s Norm
Johnson and Jerry Franklin in designing a variable retention regeneration harvest in the moist forests of the Oregon Coast Range.
After consulting with the professors and a neighboring tribe, the
BLM and Coquille Indian Tribe
selected T28S, R10W, Section 17
on the Coos Bay Wagon Road
Lands as the location for the pilot
timber sale. This area is typical of
moist forests found throughout
the Oregon coast range and meets
the specifications outlined by
Professors Johnson and Franklin.
The area is approximately 200
acres in size and contains Matrix
and Riparian Reserve land use allocations. Tribe and BLM specialists will work together on a joint
interdisciplinary team to analyze
the environmental effects of the
timber sale. The BLM and Tribe
will provide multiple opportunities for you to review the project’s
progress and provide feedback.
