Copyright
and teaching
materials
Can I use works by
others, either images or
text, as teaching material without having to
ask permission?
What use does the intellectual property law allow you to make?
Citation rights
Teaching illustration
You can include extracts from other works
or entire images in teaching material that
you have prepared; however, you must
In class you can use (show, read, distribute copies to students, etc.)
• Small fragments of works or complete images,
providing that you cite the author and the
source from where you have taken it.
• reproduce them accurately,
• as a citation or to discuss them, and the
citations must also be a complement to
your material, rather than a substantial part
of it,
Other possibilities
• However, this does not include the use of university manuals or collections or compilations of
images and extracts from works.
• and you must cite the author and the
source from where you have taken it.
Electronic resources
In your teaching materials, you can
include links to documents in the
electronic resources to which the
Library has a subscription.
Some providers of electronic resources also allow documents to
be reproduced from databases
and uploaded to the Aula Global, or
allow you to include them in your
teaching materials, provided that
they are consulted from the Aula
Global (see the Conditions of Use
section on the Library website at
http://www.upf.edu/bibtic/
recursos/llicencies.html).
In any case, however, under the
terms of citation rights you can
always reproduce parts or
whole images from them or use
short extracts or images in class
as teaching illustration.
Works in the public
You can make free use of works that
are in the public domain, while stating the authorship (you can copy
them, upload them to the Aula Global,
give students a copy, etc.).
When does the public
domain apply?
Works become part of the public domain 70 years after the death of the
author (the period is 80 years for authors who died prior to 1987).
Laws, court rulings and their official
translations are also part of the public
domain.
Licenses
http://creativecommons.org
You can use works that have been
disseminated with a Creative
Commons or similar licence, according to the specific conditions
of use stipulated therein. For example, if you are not allowed to produce derivative works, you can upload the work to the Aula Global but
you may not modify it.
What are Creative Commons licences?
They are a series of licences that specify
the conditions for reuse and distribution
of works. Under the terms of these licences, authors authorize us to use
their work in certain ways (e.g. reproducing or modifying the work) free
of charge, without having to ask
them for their specific authorization.
Each licence is complemented
by a very clear graphic summary of the permitted uses.
You can also disseminate your
teaching materials using these licences.
CEDRO: digital
uses licence
The UPF has arranged an annual
digital uses licence for universities
with the Spanish Reproduction
Rights Centre (CEDRO).
This licence enables you to make
use in class, reproduce and upload magazine articles or up
to 10% of the contents of a
book in the Aula Global so
that students enrolled in your
subjects can consult them.
