Contact: Tara Martinak (541) 573-4400 Release No. OR-020-10-23 May 25, 2010 NEW BLM RECREATION MAP AVAILABLE FOR OREGON’S BURNS DISTRICT HINES, Ore. – A new recreation map titled “Steens-High Desert Country” is now available for purchase from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) offices across the state. The map, which covers the southern portion of the BLM Burns District, was finalized in April after several years of development with the Steens Mountain Advisory Council, the Burns District BLM, and the Oregon/Washington BLM State Office. The 1 inch to 1 mile scale map covers approximately 8,000 square miles from just north of Highway 20 at Burns, east to Warm Springs Reservoir, south to below the Nevada border, and west to Camp Gap Ranch. The map offers extensive information about the area as well as land status, administrative boundaries, road surfaces, recreation sites and points of interest and wildlife viewing opportunities. The “Steens High-Desert Country” map is part of the Pacific Northwest Recreation Map Series, an interagency series of maps that covers both Region 6 United States Forest Service and BLMadministered lands in Oregon and Washington. The creation of the Pacific Northwest Recreation Map Series exemplifies the ongoing cooperation between these agencies in Service First endeavors. A consistent regional collection of maps reduces the total number of maps visitors must buy to obtain dual-agency coverage. This series of maps achieves the National Service First goals for improving customer service and increasing operational efficiency. An article about this map series is also available in the latest issue of the BLM’s magazine, Northwest Passage: http://www.blm.gov/or/news/files/Northwest_Passage_Issue7_PrintVer.pdf The “Steens-High Desert Country” map is printed on all-weather paper and sells for $8.00. For more information, contact the Burns District BLM office at (541) 573-4400. Additional information about this map, as well as other BLM products, is available online at: http://www.blm.gov/or/onlineservices/index.php About the BLM The BLM manages more land – 253 million surface acres – than any other Federal agency. This land, known as the National System of Public Lands, is primarily located in 12 Western States, including Alaska. The Bureau, with a budget of about $1 billion, also administers 700 million acres of sub-surface mineral estate throughout the nation. The BLM’s multipleuse mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on public lands.
