For general scholarship enquiries, you can now call into the Scholarships Office located on Level one of the Student
Centre – Te Manawa (opposite Bennetts Bookstore).
Scholarship applications, acceptance forms, etc., can be dropped off at the Scholarships Office reception, given to the
staff on the Student Information desk, or deposited in the red drop box beside their counter.
For Tauranga students, applications can be dropped at the Information Centre at either the Bongard Centre or the
Windermere Campus.

SCHOLARSHIPS OF THE MONTH
Waikato Regional Council and Waikato-Tainui – Dame Te Atairangikaahu Scholarship
Closing date: 21 August 2015
Level: Undergraduate
The Scholarship is open to application by Māori students whose family is resident within the
Waikato Regional Council’s operational boundaries.
Applicants will be enrolled full-time, at undergraduate level (up to, and including, honours level),
at the University of Waikato.
Preference may be given to candidates enrolled in the resource management or environmental fields.
Recent recipients have been studying in the following fields: Geography, Environmental Planning,
Biological Sciences, Law, Teaching, Screen and Media, and Māori language.

University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarships 2015-16 (Apply online)
Closing date: 31 August (for all Faculties and Schools)
Level: Undergraduate / Graduate
The University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarships are an initiative to provide promising undergraduate,
honours, and first-year masters students with the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of research.
For 2015-16, the Scholarships will have a value of $5,000 and will run for a ten-week period during the 2015-16
summer study break. To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, honours or master’s
degree at a New Zealand or Australian university.

Cayne Dunnett Memorial Scholarship

Kamira Henry (Binga) Haggie Scholarship

WSU Scholarship for Cultural Contribution

This Scholarship is awarded annually by the WSU to an undergraduate student who makes an outstanding cultural
contribution to the University (independent of academic performance).
Cultural input will be assessed on:

WSU ‘First in Family’ Scholarship

The award is intended to acknowledge, celebrate, and support undergraduate students who have never had a
family member attend university.
The Scholarship will be awarded to a current University of Waikato undergraduate student who is (at the time of
application) enrolled full-time in the penultimate (second-to-last) year of their degree, and is the first member of
his/her immediate family to attend university.

Edna Money Future Pacific Leaders’ Scholarship (Apply online)

This Scholarship has been established to provide support for students to achieve academically in a programme of

This scholarship has been established to alleviate barriers of access to higher education for young people
undertaking secondary school in Putaruru or Tokoroa. The Scholarship will be awarded on the basis of evidence of

Computer Graphic Design Fees Scholarship

The Computer Graphic Design Fees Scholarship is open to applicants (Domestic & International) who are enrolling in
the first year of study towards an undergraduate degree with a major in Computer Graphic Design at the University of

Computer Science Undergraduate Scholarship
Examination date: 16 and 17 October 2015

The Computer Science Undergraduate Scholarship examination is to determine whether new students have sufficient
proficiency in the subject to merit placement in more senior papers. In addition, students demonstrating a particular
aptitude for the subject will be offered $5,000, which will be credited directly to their tuition fees.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITY
Masters Project: Automating Oxygen Delivery to Regulate Patient Blood Oxygen Saturation

Genesis Oncology Trust Grants

Mathematics Fees Scholarship
Examination date: 27 August 2015
Level: Entrance / School Leaver
The Mathematics Fees Scholarship is open to applicants who are enrolling in the first year of study towards an
undergraduate degree with a major in Mathematics at the University of Waikato. Successful applicants will usually
be intending to enrol in the Faculty of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, although in exceptional circumstances
the Selection Panel may consider applicants who are enrolling in a Mathematics major through another Faculty. The
decision will be based on the results of a competitive examination held in August. Results will be circulated to
participants by the end of September. Those interested in participating should contact the Department of

Brian Smith Memorial 499/ 599 Scholarship

Level: Undergraduate / Graduate
The Brian Smith Memorial 499 / 599 Scholarship was established in 1999 by the Waikato Management School in
memory of Professor B V Smith, Director of Undergraduate Studies from 1991 to 1998. The Scholarship has a value
of $1,500. This Scholarship is open to Management students enrolled in their 499 or 599 Report of an Investigation,
who have not completed the paper. The Selection Panel will focus on each applicant’s academic merit and personal
character, their enrolment in the Bachelor of Management Studies, and the academic merit and practical significance of
the investigation proposal, among other things.

AGMARDT Postdoctoral Fellowships

MESNZ Bill Buckley Engineering Scholarship

The objective of the award is to encourage New Zealand students into tertiary education in the field of engineering
technology. The Scholarship is available to assist students commencing study towards an IPENZ accredited
engineering degree, diploma or certificate from any year level. The Scholarship is paid in the form of a tuition fees
credit up to $5,000.

Methanex New Zealand Undergraduate Scholarships

Level: Undergraduate
Two Scholarships are offered and are open to New Zealand citizens who are enrolled in their 2nd year of
undergraduate study at a New Zealand University, who have achieved an excellent academic record, and are about
to begin their 3rd year of full-time study for an undergraduate degree programme in the areas of Mechanical, Electrical,
Process, Control Systems, Reliability Engineering, Instrumentation or HSE/PSM. Students must have a genuine
interest in pursuing a career in the petroleum industry in New Zealand upon completion of their study. The value of
the award is $5,000 for one year only. Methanex and PSANZ will endeavour to provide Scholarship recipients with a
mentor to assist them through their program of study, as well as the possibility of an opportunity to work as a paid

The Macmillan Brown Prize for Writers

JSPS 8th HOPE Meeting in Japan
Closing date: 31 August 2015
Level: Postgraduate/Postdoctorals
Under the auspices of the New Zealand-Japan Bilateral Programme between the Japan Society for the Promotion of
Science and the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the Royal Society of New Zealand is
administering the nomination of up to five young researchers to attend the 8th HOPE meeting with Nobel laureates in
Japan. The HOPE meeting is very useful for emerging New Zealand researchers (PhD candidates or postdocs) in
learning the importance of international collaboration and establishing long-term relationships with fellow
researchers. The next HOPE meeting’s topics are: Physics, Chemistry, Physiology/Medicine and Related Fields
(including natural sciences, e.g. Biology, Agriculture etc) and take place on the 7 – 11 March 2016 in Japan.

The A Zulauf Trust Scholarship

This Scholarship promotes the study of Mathematics at the University of Waikato. Candidates will, in the year of
application, be enrolled or enrolling full-time to undertake the research portion of their Master’s degree. It is expected
that the bulk of that Mathematics research will take place in the year of application. All applicants, domestic or
international, must meet the University’s enrolment criteria for study at Master’s level.
The payment of this $5,000 Scholarship will be overseen by the Public Trust.

University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarships 2015-16 (Apply online)

The University of Waikato Summer Research Scholarships are an initiative to provide promising undergraduate,
honours, and first-year masters students with the opportunity to experience the challenges and rewards of
research. For 2015-16, the Scholarships will have a value of $5,000 and will run for a ten-week period during the
2015-16 summer study break. To be eligible, students must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate, honours or
master’s degree at a New Zealand or Australian university.

Edna Waddell Undergraduate Scholarships for Women in Technology & Engineering

There are three Scholarships offered, up to $5,000, to provide funds to help women undertake undergraduate study
for degrees in engineering and technology. The Scholarships are available for women entering their first year of fulltime study for an undergraduate degree, who have not previously studied full-time at that level in technology and
engineering. The Scholarships are intended for school leavers and mature women; if the latter, preference will be
given to those who have worked in industry for at least three years and/or have passed sub-degree courses in
technology or engineering.

Dick and Mary Earle Scholarship in Technology (UNZ) (Apply online)

This Scholarship is offered to students studying towards a masters or doctoral degree in the following fields: for the
support and encouragement of postgraduate research into aspects of technology in New Zealand universities. The
values are $17,000 at master’s level, and $20,000 per annum at doctoral level.
The purpose of the scholarship is to provide funds for individuals to undertake research towards a masterate or
doctorate degree in one or both of the two fields:
 Innovation and product development
 Bioprocess technology
Applicants are required to have completed the requirements for a BTech, BEng, BE degree or equivalent at a New
Zealand University. This award has a tenure of up to three years, depending on the recipient’s course of study.

Todd Foundation Postgraduate Scholarship in Energy Research (UNZ) (Apply online)

This scholarship is offered to students who are undertaking research in the field of energy (towards a doctoral degree
at a New Zealand university or approved research institution in New Zealand) which may have wide relevance
including value to New Zealand. It is available for up to three years with a value of $25,000 per annum, including

Japanese Language Undergraduate Sasakawa Scholarship

The fund offers scholarships to students enrolling full-time for a first undergraduate degree in Japanese language, or
Japanese language conjoint with a second degree. The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage top students to
continue with their Japanese study at tertiary level and to consider combining it with another discipline. Candidates
must be under 20 years of age in January in the year of application, have entered NCEA Level 3 and/or Scholarship
Japanese (or their equivalent) within three years of the year of application, be a New Zealand citizen or NZ permanent
residency status and be beginning a course of study that will enable them to complete a major in Japanese. The
value of each scholarship shall be $2,500 in year 1 and $500 in years 2,3 and (if applicable) 4.

The Betty Loughhead Soroptimist Scholarship Trust

WorleyParsons New Zealand Scholarships

date. These Scholarships provide opportunities to research in a wide range of disciplines in Business, Creative Arts,

The International Council for Canadian Studies (ICCS) offers up to ten grants worldwide to masters and

Teaching or research internships (assistantships) of 1-3 months duration at a Canadian or foreign university
with a Canadian Studies Program. Applicants must have completed a doctoral degree on a topic primarily
related to Canada, and not be employed in a full-time university teaching position.
 International Research Linkages (IRL)
This programme aims to promote and facilitate international collaborative research between research teams
from Canada and (one or more) countries where Canadian Studies are represented.
 The Canada-Asia-Pacific Award in Canadian Studies (CAPA)
Aimed at promoting the understanding of bilateral and multilateral relations between Canada and the AsiaPacific, this award assists scholars in higher education institutions or research and policy planning institutes
in the Asia-Pacific region to undertake short-term research, including collaborative research.
 ACSANZ Postgraduate Travel Award

Up to five grants are awarded each year to postgraduate students for a short research trip to Canada.

 ICCS Canadian Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship

This programme enables Canadian and foreign academics who have completed a doctoral thesis on a topic
primarily related to Canada to visit a Canadian or foreign university with a Canadian Studies program for a
teaching or research fellowship. Fellowships are for a minimum of one month and a maximum of three
months. Applicants must not be employed in a full-time university teaching position and must agree not to
accept honoraria or salary during their fellowships. The grant will be C$2,500 per month plus the cost a return

HEERF Scholarships

HEERF makes available annually a series of post graduate research scholarships open to NZ citizens and NZ
permanent residence holders. The scholarships are typically linked to heavy engineering industry related research
proposals administered by HERA, however scholarship applicants are also able to submit their own research
project proposal.
All scholarship research proposals intended for funding through HEERF are required to go through the HERA
Research Panel system for evaluation and prior approval before being submitted through the HERA Director to the

LEARN Fellowships

The Livestock Emissions & Abatement Research Network (LEARN) is an international research network focused
upon improving the understanding of greenhouse gas emissions from livestock agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture
and Forestry offers up to nine New Zealand LEARN Fellowships per annum for scientists or technicians from
developing countries to work in New Zealand in the area of Livestock Emissions Research.
The objectives of the network are to improve the quantification of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions from animal
agriculture at all scales, and to facilitate the development of cost effective and practical greenhouse gas mitigation
solutions.
There are two separate categories available. These are LEARN Work Trainee Awards (tenure up to six months)
and LEARN Postdoctoral Fellowships (tenure up to twelve months). There is no set application close date for the
Fellowships, instead they are dealt with on a case by case basis by MAF's advisory panel. It is expected that the
majority of applications/nominations will be from/for individuals who have already established links with researchers
