New Zealand Aid Programme Awards for Postgraduate Field Research(Universities NZ)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT), is making available Postgraduate Field Research Awards to assist Masters
and Doctoral students meet a proportion of their travel expenses and associated costs in carrying out field research in

Hilary Jolly Memorial Scholarship (apply online)

The Scholarship is open to domestic and international students for applications from full-time masters, or doctoral students in
any field of Freshwater Ecology at the University of Waikato. The Scholarship is tenable for up to two years, and has a value of
up to $6,000 p.a. for master degree students, and is tenable for up to three years, and has a value of up to $15,000 p.a. for
doctoral students.

Evonik Industries German Scholarship (apply online)

This scholarship, sponsored by Evonik Industries, aims to support German linguistic skills of students studying at the University

Heartland Bank Freemasons Scholarships

Holland Scholarship

The Holland Scholarship is financed by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science together with Dutch research
universities and universities of applied sciences. This scholarship is meant for international students from outside the European
Economic Area (EEA) who want to do their bachelor’s or master’s in Holland.

This Scholarship was established to commemorate the spirited life and achievements of Tess Embling. It is designed to
encourage and reward students who share the passion and enthusiasm that Tess had for her studies. The Scholarship is open
to students enrolling or enrolled (either full-time or part-time) in the first year of a Master’s degree in the Faculty of Science
and Engineering at the University of Waikato. Preference will be given to students studying in the fields of biological or

Beef & Lamb New Zealand Undergraduate Scholarship

This Scholarship was established to help students study towards a bachelor’s degree and an honours year. The experience will
give them the knowledge and skills they need to support a thriving sheep and beef industry in New Zealand. The scholarship
can be used towards study at Massey, Lincoln and Waikato Universities in agriculture, science (including food technology),
business and social science disciplines that lead to careers in the livestock, meat and related agribusiness sectors. Scholarships
are for up to four years and pay the full annual tuition fees, up to $5,000 a year.

our website to apply for one of a number of contestable Scholarships.
To be considered for this Scholarship, ‘gap year’ applicants will need to meet all eligibility criteria apart from completing
secondary school in 2015.
This Scholarship is one of two awards offered by the University of Waikato to recognise academic merit and excellence in NCEA,
CIE, or IB. The $3,000 Merit Scholarship can be applied towards either tuition fees or the charges for accommodation in a
University hall of residence.
Candidates must:
 Be a New Zealand: citizen, permanent resident or temporary permit holder, OR be an Australian citizen
 Have achieved the required entry qualifications while studying at a New Zealand or Australian secondary school in
2015 and meets all other criteria of the scholarship
 Have achieved University Entrance
 Have achieved the NCEA Level 3 Certificate with a Merit endorsement, or equivalent, through a New Zealand school
 Apply to enrol at the University of Waikato by the application deadline for new students

This award if a post-doctoral Award for New Zealand women scientists. The Award is aimed at an emerging scientist rather
than someone well-established. Preference is given to women within seven years of obtaining PhD, working or studying within
the STEM fields (science, technology, engineering, mathematics). The award has a value of $15,000 cash and $3,000 towards
overseas travel and a commemorative medal.

Global Fisheries Trainee Scholarship Programme

This Global Fisheries Trainee Scholarship Programme is a jointly funded training and development venture between TE Ohu Kai
Moana Trustee Limited (TE Ohu Kaimoana) of New Zealand and international fishing company, Nippon Suisan Kaisha, Limited
(Nissue) of Japan. The scholarship focuses on developing business, science, operational and technology skills of Maori for the
fisheries and seafood industries in New Zealand. Successful candidates will travel to Japan to complete a trainee programme
and study in their chosen field of development.
Puke Ariki - George Mason Charitable Trust Scholarship
Closing date: 12 February 2016

This scholarship is to be awarded to advance the study of the natural environment, archaeology and social history of the
Taranaki region e.g. biological sciences, earth sciences, geology, archaeology or anthropology. The scholarship supports the
studies of students with links to Taranaki and/or research relating to Taranaki’s natural history. The value of the award is up to
$5,000.

Puke Ariki Trust Scholarship

The Scholarship is awarded to advance the study of the social history of the Taranaki region; including students of (but not
exclusively) anthropology, archaeology, history, museum studies, art history and Māori studies. The scholarship is intended
to encourage research that will enrich the extensive heritage collections within Puke Ariki and add to the body of knowledge
relating specifically to Taranaki. The research will have a significant component that relates to interpreting objects or archival
documents from the heritage collection of Puke Ariki.

AusIMM New Zealand Branch Education Endowment Trust Scholarships

The purpose of the Education Endowment Trust is to provide scholarships to students undertaking research in geology,
engineering or the environment that is related to the minerals, coal and petroleum industries. The EET offers two types of
scholarships:
 Postgraduate scholarships of $5,000 –normally awarded to students undertaking a Masters degree by thesis
 Undergraduate BSc(Hons) project scholarship of $2,000 – awarded to students undertaking a BSc(Hons) degree in
their fourth year or Honours project year of their study.
The EET also offer two further awards, Lloyd Jones Award and Jock Braithwaite Award (of $1,000 each) to outstanding
Postgraduate candidates applying for the EET Postgrad scholarships.

FMB Reynolds Scholarship in Law to Oxford (Universities NZ)

The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist NZ citizens or permanent residents who have completed the requirements for an
LLB to commence postgraduate study in Law at the University of Oxford. Candidates must have already applied for a place in
a postgraduate programme in Law at Oxford. The current value of the one-year Scholarship, which can normally be held with
other funding, is up to $8,000.

Jack McGill Music Scholarship

Level: Graduate
The Jack McGill Music Scholarships are awarded to New Zealand musicians who are pursuing advanced music studies overseas.
While the scholarship is open to all instrumentalist and singers, priority will be given to pianists. The value of the award is up
to $10,000. The Scholarship is open to NZ citizens aged 20 years or older who hold one or more of the following qualifications:
 Degree or diploma in music from a New Zealand university
 A Licentiate of Trinity College, London
 A Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music

The Scholarship, offered by Lawson Robinson and the Hawke’s Bay A&P Society, aims to recognise outstanding academic and
leadership qualities in a student currently enrolled in a full-time land base production industries programme at a New Zealand
University at graduate or postgraduate level. The Scholarship has a value of $3,000 which will be paid towards their course
fees.

Commonwealth Scholarships
Closing date: 29 February 2016
Level: Graduate
These scholarships are administered by the Association of Commonwealth Universities and are funded by the Commonwealth
Scholarship and Fellowship Plan endowment fund and are open to all Commonwealth countries other than the host country.
Applications are now open for fully-funded Commonwealth Scholarships for Master’s courses starting mid-2016 in the
following countries: Bangladesh, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Pakistan, Rwanda, Swaziland and Uganda. Applicants must
be a citizen of any Commonwealth country other than the host country. The scholarships provide a return flight, a stipend to
cover living costs, an arrival allowance and full tuition fees. Applicants must hold a first degree of upper second class standard
(or above) in a discipline relevant to that in which study is proposed.

Dune Restoration Trust of New Zealand Post Graduate Study Award

Gordon Watson Scholarship (Universities NZ)
Closing date: 1 March 2016
Level: Graduate / Postgraduate
Candidates for the Scholarship must hold a top class honours degree, or degree in theology, from a university in New Zealand.
The purpose of the Scholarship is to allow the holder to study (overseas) questions of international relationships or social and
economic conditions, at Masters or PhD level. Winners must return to New Zealand at the conclusion of their studies.
Each Scholarship shall be awarded for a term of up to three years to be spent at a university or universities in Britain, Europe,
Asia, or America. The current value of the Scholarship is $12,000 per annum.

The Judith Clark Memorial Fellowships have been established to assist recent music graduates undertake a special short-term
project that will have long term benefits for their future professional careers as musicians. Projects which will be considered

them on their merits. The range of individual award values available is between $5,000 - $15,000.

Kiwi Music Scholarship (Universities NZ)

This Scholarship is to assist outstanding New Zealand musical performers or conductors who have completed, or are completing
an honours or masters degree in musical performance in New Zealand to continue their musical development either overseas
or in New Zealand. The Scholarship will be awarded for classical instrumental performance (including vocal performance) or
conducting. The Scholarship funds available range from $50,000 to $60,000.

LB Wood Travelling Scholarship (Universities NZ)

The Scholarship is available to graduates of any university in New Zealand from any faculty provided that application for the
Scholarship is made within three years from the date of graduation.
The Scholarship shall be offered each year and shall be of the annual value of $3,000 payable by half-yearly instalments, as a
supplement to some other postgraduate scholarship held by scholars for the purposes of their studies in Britain. Each
Scholarship shall be tenable for not more than three years at a university or institution of university rank in Britain.

New Zealand Law Foundation Ethel Benjamin Scholarship for Women (Universities NZ)

This award was established to support postgraduate research in Law that encompasses the wider objectives of the NZ Law
Foundation, in particular research that will protect and promote the interests of the public in relation to legal matters in New
Zealand.
A Scholarship may be awarded to any woman scholar who is the holder of a New Zealand university law degree and is accepted
into a postgraduate course in law at either a New Zealand or an overseas university acceptable to the Selection Committee.
The Scholarships range in value from $20,000 (for study in NZ) up to $50,000 (for study overseas).

Patricia Pratt Scholarship in Musical Performance (Universities NZ)

The purpose of the Scholarship is to assist outstanding New Zealand musical performers who have completed an honours
degree in musical performance in New Zealand to continue their musical development (beyond honours level) at a renowned
international music school or conservatorium. The Scholarship will be awarded for classical music performance including vocal
or instrumental performance or conducting.
The value of the Scholarship is up to US$30,000 per annum and may be used for travel, tuition and residence expenses.

Shirtcliffe Fellowship (Universities NZ)

The purpose of the Shirtcliffe Fellowships is to assist students of outstanding ability and character who are graduates of a
university in New Zealand, in the continuation of their studies in New Zealand or the Commonwealth.
The Fellowships shall be open to New Zealand citizens who are ordinarily resident in New Zealand and who:
1. Are candidates for a doctoral scholarship awarded by a New Zealand university; and
2. Whose degree is awarded in any faculty or school which, if that degree had been available in 1935, would in the
opinion of Universities New Zealand - Te Pōkai Tara be expected to have been awarded following a course of study in
one or other of the Faculties of Arts, Science, Law, Commerce or Agriculture.
The Fellowship is currently awarded to one scholar per year at a value of $5,000 per annum for up to three years.

William Georgetti Scholarship (Universities NZ)

The purpose of the William Georgetti Scholarship is to encourage postgraduate study and research, normally in New Zealand,
in a field that, in the opinion of the Scholarship Board, is important to the social, cultural or economic development of New
Zealand.
Among other conditions, applicants must have resided in New Zealand for a period of at least five years immediately preceding
the year of selection, and must hold a degree or other academic qualification reasonably equivalent (in the opinion of the
Scholarship Board) to a degree of a university in New Zealand.
For students studying in New Zealand, the Scholarship has a value of up to $20,000 per year for master’s study, and up to
$30,000 per year (for up to three years) for doctoral study. For students studying overseas, the Scholarship has a value of up
to $45,000 per year.

The Fulbright Ian Axford Fellowships in Public Policy

This Fellowship is for outstanding mid-career professionals from the United States to research, travel and gain practical
experience in public policy in New Zealand for seven months. Fellows will be based at a host institution and carefully paired

Fulbright-Creative New Zealand Pacific Writers’ Residency

Fulbright New Zealand and Creative New Zealand are currently calling for applications to the Fulbright-Creative New Zealand
Pacific Writers’ Residency, an award which offers a New Zealand writer of Pacific heritage the opportunity to work for up to
three months on a creative writing project exploring Pacific identity, culture or history at the University of Hawai'i. Valued at
NZ$30,000 the three month residency includes return airfares to Hawai’i, accommodation costs and an artist stipend. It is open
to writers across all genres, including fiction and non-fiction authors, playwrights, poets and screen writers. Previous recipients
include filmmaker Sima Urale, performance poet Tusiata Avia, playwright Victor Rodger and children’s author Sarona AionoIosefa.

German Education Exchange Service Teaching Assistants

The German Education Exchange Service is offering 12 scholarships for Teaching Assistances to spend nine months at a German
school between August 2016 and May 2017. Teaching assistants work at schools, usually secondary school level, and assist in
teaching English for up to 12 hours per week. Applicants must be native speakers of English and confident communicating in
German. Students of German language and/or literature holding a BA at the time of the beginning of the programme are
preferred. Applicants should be under the age of 29 years at the time of application. The scholarship entails a monthly stipend
of €800, a travel subsidy worth €1,000 and a combined health, accident and liability insurance for the duration of the
programme.

Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia (PMSA)

The PMSA is a scholarship programme funded by the New Zealand government and administered by Education New Zealand.
The Scholarship is awarded to individuals and covers costs relating to study or research in Asia. Approved destinations are
ASEAN countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos, Philippines, Malaysia, Vietnam, Singapore, Indonesia, and Brunei
Darussalam, as well as China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, India, and Sri Lanka. Preferred target institutions will be top 500 educational
institutions and/or educational institutions with whom a New Zealand educational institution has a formal agreement or
partnership.
Applicants must be a New Zealand citizens or Permanent Residence holders of a minimum 2 years at the time of application.
Applicants cannot hold citizenship in their destination country in Asia. Programmes must be at least 6 weeks (up to a maximum
of 2 years) and demonstrably linked to New Zealand’s trade or economic agenda in Asia. Programmes must take place in Asia
and be full-time.
Applicants will display:
 The potential to succeed in academic study abroad
 The ability to represent New Zealand positively; particularly the quality of a New Zealand education experience
 The willingness and preparedness to put into practice the objectives of the scholarship
There are two categories of eligible programmes: exchange programmes, and independent (non-exchange) programmes. If

The Pae Tawhiti Scholarship Programme

Whakauae Research Services Ltd (Whakauae) is the only iwi-owned and mandated health research centre in Aotearoa.
Whakauae was established in 2005 as a unit of Te Maru o Ruahine Trust (TMORT); the contracting and service arm of Ngāti
Hauiti, an iwi located in central Rangitīkei. The aim of establishing Whakauae was twofold: to develop the research capacity of
Ngāti Hauiti and to undertake high quality Māori-centred health research to inform, and contribute to, improved outcomes for
Māori.
Since its establishment Whakauae has gained a reputation for conducting high quality health research that makes a difference
for Māori; building the capability of Māori communities to drive their own research agendas; and building the Māori health
research workforce.
The scholarships are available to Masters candidates in their thesis year and to PhD candidates, through an application and
assessment process. Applicants for the scholarships should be enrolled in a Masters (by thesis) or PhD programme, which will
contribute to improving the health and wellbeing of Māori whānau, hapū and iwi. The value of the award for PhD study is
$25,000pa and for Masters $10,000pa.

Teaching or research internships (assistantships) of 1-3 months duration at a Canadian or foreign university with a
Canadian Studies Program. Applicants must have completed a doctoral degree on a topic primarily related to Canada,

 International Research Linkages (IRL)
This programme aims to promote and facilitate international collaborative research between research teams from
Canada and (one or more) countries where Canadian Studies are represented.
 The Canada-Asia-Pacific Award in Canadian Studies (CAPA)
Aimed at promoting the understanding of bilateral and multilateral relations between Canada and the Asia-Pacific,
this award assists scholars in higher education institutions or research and policy planning institutes in the Asia-Pacific
region to undertake short-term research, including collaborative research.
 ACSANZ Postgraduate Travel Award

Up to five grants are awarded each year to postgraduate students for a short research trip to Canada. Research must

 ICCS Canadian Studies Postdoctoral Fellowship

This programme enables Canadian and foreign academics who have completed a doctoral thesis on a topic primarily
related to Canada to visit a Canadian or foreign university with a Canadian Studies program for a teaching or research
fellowship. Fellowships are for a minimum of one month and a maximum of three months. Applicants must not be
employed in a full-time university teaching position and must agree not to accept honoraria or salary during their

HEERF Scholarships
Application date: Accepts applications year-round –applications generally considered March/April
Levels: Postgraduate
HEERF makes available annually a series of post graduate research scholarships open to NZ citizens and NZ permanent
residence holders. The scholarships are typically linked to heavy engineering industry related research proposals
administered by HERA, however scholarship applicants are also able to submit their own research project proposal.
All scholarship research proposals intended for funding through HEERF are required to go through the HERA Research Panel
system for evaluation and prior approval before being submitted through the HERA Director to the HEERF Trustees. For

LEARN Fellowships

The Livestock Emissions & Abatement Research Network (LEARN) is an international research network focused upon improving
the understanding of greenhouse gas emissions from livestock agriculture. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry offers up
to nine New Zealand LEARN Fellowships per annum for scientists or technicians from developing countries to work in New
Zealand in the area of Livestock Emissions Research.

The objectives of the network are to improve the quantification of non-CO2 greenhouse gas emissions from animal agriculture
at all scales, and to facilitate the development of cost effective and practical greenhouse gas mitigation solutions.
There are two separate categories available. These are LEARN Work Trainee Awards (tenure up to six months) and LEARN
Postdoctoral Fellowships (tenure up to twelve months). There is no set application close date for the Fellowships, instead they
are dealt with on a case by case basis by MAF's advisory panel. It is expected that the majority of applications/nominations will
be from/for individuals who have already established links with researchers at the NZ host institution/organisation. All
candidates must be registered members of the LEARN Network, and may register at www.livestockemissions.net. The terms

New Zealand Defence Force Scholarship Schemes
Levels: School Leavers / Undergraduate / Graduate / Postgraduate
The New Zealand Defence Force offers four tertiary scholarship schemes across the three services to Engineering students. The
majors in which the NZDF is likely to provide sponsorship are: Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Software, Materials,
aeronautical Engineering and Mechatronics, however other majors will be considered by the individual services.

TeachNZ Scholarships

TeachNZ Scholarships are targeted at areas of priority for teacher supply, in order to meet increasing demand for teachers in
some areas over the next ten years. TeachNZ states that the following areas have been identified: early childhood teachers,
Māori-medium teachers, secondary teachers of specific subjects, and teachers in rural areas. These Scholarships are available

Te Tohu Paetahi Entrance Scholarship

The School of Maori & Pacific Development Te Tohu Paetahi Entrance Scholarship will assist recipients enrolling full-time, for
the first time, in the Te Tohu Paetahi Programme at the University of Waikato. To be eligible to receive this award, students in
the programme must be enrolled in a BA or BMPD in the following papers: MAOR111, MAOR112, MAOR211, MAOR212,
MAOR213 and MAOR 214.
