Te Ara ki Angitū: Pathways to Excellence is about enabling individual and collective potential by
setting out a pathway for realising success and excellence through University study. The
Tokoroa and Putaruru School Leaver Scholarship: Te Ara ki Angitū has been designed to
recognise the important relationship and connection that the University of Waikato has with the
Tokoroa and Putaruru secondary schools. The Scholarship seeks to alleviate barriers of access
to higher education for young people undertaking secondary school in these towns.

Eligibility

Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of evidence of financial need, personal
circumstances, leadership and community roles, academic ability and commitment
to succeed in University study.
Preference will be given to those who, because of their financial circumstances,
will continue to live in Tokoroa/ Putaruru through the year and commute to the
university on a daily basis (using the University bus service).
To be eligible for consideration, candidates must:
a) apply for the scholarship
b) be a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident;
c) be studying in 2016 at Tokoroa High School, Forest View High School,
Putaruru College, or Te Wharekura o Te Kaokaoroa;
d) be studying at NCEA Level 3 towards University Entrance;
e) be intending to enrol at the University of Waikato for the first time1 in 2017,
commencing study in the first semester of 2017; and,
f) be applying to enrol at the University of Waikato to study as a full-time student
(in a minimum of 105 points, usually seven papers) in an undergraduate
degree.
Value
3.1.
Scholarships will have a value of $5,000 each and will be applied to tuition fees at
the University of Waikato.

Applications are invited from students studying at NCEA Level 3 towards University
Entrance in 2016 at one of the Tokoroa and Putaruru Secondary Schools listed in
2.1(c).
Applications must include a personal statement outlining evidence of financial need,
personal circumstances, leadership and community roles, academic ability and the
commitment to succeed in University study.
Applications must be accompanied by a letter of support from the Principal from the
applicant’s Secondary School.
Applications close 31 August 2016.
5. Selection Criteria

In awarding the scholarships, the Selection Panel will take into consideration
financial need, personal circumstances (for example, first-in-family to study at
university), leadership and community roles, academic ability, and the commitment
to succeed in university study.
Candidates who have undertaken STAR papers at the University of Waikato are not
excluded by this clause.
6. Selection Panel

The Scholarships will be awarded by a Selection Panel comprising:

The Vice-Chancellor

The Assistant Vice-Chancellor (Student and Information Services)

The Dean of the School of Graduate Research (Chairperson)

The Director of Maori Advancement

The Maori Student Achievement Manager
The Selection Panel’s decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into
following the selection meeting.
7. Awarding

The offer of a Scholarship must be accepted by the date indicated in the letter of
offer.
Tenure
8.1.
The Scholarship will have a maximum tenure of one year.
9. Other Conditions
9.1.
Recipients must remain enrolled full-time for the period of tenure. Should a recipient
withdraw from any papers, without adding sufficient papers to maintain an overall
enrolment in 105 points for the 2017 academic year, the University may ask for the
Scholarship to be repaid.
9.2.
The Tokoroa and Putaruru School Leaver Scholarship: Te Ara ki Angitū cannot be
held in conjunction with a Sir Edmund Hillary Scholarship, a University of Waikato
Academic Merit School Leaver Scholarship or a Vice-Chancellor’s Academic
Excellence School Leaver Scholarship.
9.3.
The Scholarship may be held together with any other scholarship (except those
listed in 9.2), prize or student allowance, unless the conditions of the other awards
preclude this.
9.4.
In signing and returning the Scholarship Acceptance form, the recipient will be
deemed to have read, understood and accepted the conditions of the Scholarship.
9.5.
The Scholarship is not refundable to the student under any circumstances, although
a student who withdraws from the University may (under the provisions of the Fees
Regulations) apply for a refund of tuition fees paid that were not covered by the
Scholarship.
9.6.
The Scholarships Committee may terminate a Scholarship at any time, and recoup
any funds awarded, if it is not satisfied that the recipient is following the required
programme or is not otherwise complying with the conditions governing the
Scholarship and/or the regulations of the University of Waikato. The holder of a
Scholarship shall have the right to appeal to the Education Committee against any
decision to terminate the Scholarship.

By accepting the Scholarship, the recipient agrees to participate in any publicity
concerning the Scholarship arranged by the University of Waikato.
