File and Folder Permissions
1. Security Permissions: A folder or a file can have permissions granted to it for a particular user or group of users.
a. The user or group of users may have:
i. Full Control: change, delete, rename a file or folder. Give over users or groups access to the file or folder.
ii. Modify: change, delete, rename a file or folder.
iii. Read & Execute: Read the contents of the file or execute/run the file if it is a program.
iv. List folder contents: List all the files in the folder.
v. Read: Read the contents of the file.
vi. Write: Create a new file in the folder.
2. Folder Inheritance: Folder permissions are inherited by all folders or files created below the parent folder, unless you remove the inheritance
property from the sub-folder. How to remove the inheritance property from a folder is explained below under “How to turn inheritance off”.
3. CSU Default Permissions: Research folders and files have a number of default security permissions:
a. SYSTEM: Used by the system storing the files for managing those files.
b. SEC-File-Managers: Division of Information Technology staff responsible for day to day operations of the storage environment.
c. *-SA: The Security Administrators who manage access to folders and files for the Faculty or School
