2015 Volunteer Program
The City of Fort Collins and FC Bikes would like to invite you to join us for the June 2015 Open Streets
event! We are excited about this event and can’t wait to get started.
Open Streets initiatives temporarily close streets to automobile traffic so that people may use them for
walking, bicycling, dancing, playing and socializing. With more than 100 documented initiatives in North
America, Open Streets is glad to be in Fort Collins. It's a fun way to achieve environmental, social, and
economic and public health goals. We’re expecting 2,000-3,000people participating! Due to the large
number of participants we want to ensure everyone has a safe, exciting experience.

Volunteer Position Descriptions:
Set Up
Help prepare the streets! The transformation of the streets requires a great amount of set-up from
signs, banners, setting up water, assisting with partners, etc.
Information Booth
Be the shining face of Open Streets! You’ll welcome participants to the event and help them find the
information they’re looking for. Answer simple questions and help set up or take down the booth.
Intersection Superhero
Our most important volunteer role! You get to own an intersection and be an ambassador to the
neighborhood. Bring music, wear a costume, be your own block party! Help keep cars off the route and
receive smiles and thanks while you wave and cheer on participants. You will help neighbors and
participants interact, redirect neighborhood traffic and manage small barricades at your intersection.
Mobile Superhero
This position will be very active! Monitor multiple blocks of the course, guide participants and help
provide support to other volunteers. Please note on your application if you have a bike trailer that you
can ride with too! We’d love to have the ability to deliver water to those in need.
Block Captain
You’ll monitor a few block section of route with mobile and information booth volunteers reporting to
you as the liaison in case problems arise.
Evaluation Positions: The goal of evaluating Open Streets is to collect data from various sources
during the event to help guide the future of Open Streets. As part of the Open Streets Evaluation Team,
we need two types of volunteers:
Surveyor: Surveyors will collect information from event participants and their thoughts and
experience about the event itself. Surveyors will approach people randomly throughout the
route and ask them to complete a brief, one-page survey. People-lovers are encouraged!
Observer: Observers will aid in the collection of data that estimates the number of people and
types of activities they are engaged in during Open Streets. Pairs of observers will count adults
and children and tally the results for later analysis. Counts occur only 15 minutes per hour for 3
hours, and training related to a more specific protocol will help prepare Observers for the event.
A keen eye and patience are good qualities for Observers.
Break-down
You will need to take down the banners, signs, etc. Trash and remaining items must be cleaned and
nothing may be left behind. We want to leave the streets better than we found them!

Please note that there will not be a secure space to store personal items. We will have a
volunteer headquarters where food, drink and supplies will be available to Open Streets
Volunteers. We ask that you leave little to no personal items at this location, as FC Bikes and
Open Streets is not responsible for lost or stolen items.
Once the volunteer schedule is complete we will inform all volunteers where the volunteer
headquarters is located.
