Interact2 Survey: Key Themes
Executive Summary:
Online surveys were conducted with staff and students across the university on the new Blackboard
features and tools in Interact2: 146 staff and 825 students completed the surveys (there were separate
surveys for staff and students). The deadline for completing the surveys was Monday, June 1.
The majority of the staff and students who completed the survey were accepting of the impact of the new
features and tools of Blackboard on their teaching and learning. Staff reported that the Announcement,
Structuring Content Management, Email and Discussion Board tools were viewed as having the most
helpful impact on their teaching; among students the Announcement, My Grade and Discussion Board tools
were viewed as having the most helpful impact on their learning. Staff reported that the Content
Management and Discussion Board tools were viewed as having the least helpful impact on their teaching,
with student responses reporting the Discussion Boards and Blogs as having the least helpful impact on
their learning. It should be noted that the tools with the least helpful impact on teaching had much lower
percentage response rates than the tools with the most helpful impact on teaching.
The usability, appearance and improved functionality of the Blackboard features and tools were reported
as positives on the move to Interact2 by both staff and students. Issues with the Blackboard features and
tools mentioned were technical issues, issues with particular technologies and a loss of functionality with
certain tools, particularly the Discussion Boards, compared to the functionality available in Interact. The
majority of students reported that their Interact2 subject sites made use of different formats, media and
activities. The majority of students also rated as valuable the abilities to both select, collect and download
content to a single folder either online or on a mobile/laptop and to print all online modules with the click
of a button.
As Interact2 was launched across the university in 201530 neutral scores are included in the totals of
acceptance of the tools to teaching and learning given the natural resistance to new technologies; the score
excluding neutral has been provided in parentheses after the total in the key themes summary below for
completeness.
A more comprehensive survey on the Blackboard features and tools in Interact2 will be conducted in the
first half of 2016. As well as additional in-depth questions, based on an analysis of the responses from this
survey changes will be made to the phrasing of the open-ended questions relating to the most helpful and
least helpful Blackboard feature or tool. With the question relating to the most helpful feature particularly,
respondents provided only the name of the tool or feature which the previous quantitative questions with
a Likert scale on the helpfulness of the features and tools had already given. The open-ended questions will
seek to elicit the positives and where room for improvement exists to enable a better understanding of
staff and student use of Interact2.
The Division of Student Learning has been liaising with Blackboard since Interact2’s deployment to
implement system improvements and raise technical issues, and some of the features desired by survey
respondents (eg the inability to reply to discussion forum posts via email) have already been raised by DSL
with Blackboard for consideration of inclusion in future releases. DSL will continue to raise requests with
Blackboard for improvements based on feedback from staff and students. An example from this survey has
been DSL requesting the notification of replies to specific discussion forum posts [as opposed to forum
threads] and the ability to automatically subscribe users to email alerts for discussion forums as raised by
students and staff in this survey.

Interact2 Survey: Key Themes
A number of the functionalities mentioned as missing or desired by respondents are available within
Blackboard via customised settings; professional development of staff and reminders of the help and
features available may assist in the deployment of desired functionality within subject sites and further
improve staff and student’s satisfaction with Interact2.
Note: scores excluding neutral has been provided in parentheses after the total score provided, as per the
reasons outlined in the Executive Summary.
Staff Key Themes:

Impact of the new features and tools of Blackboard on Teaching
69% (37%) of staff who completed the survey were accepting of the impact of the new features and
tools of Blackboard on their teaching. 27% rated the new features and tools as unhelpful or very
unhelpful; 4% could not say [see appendix A1.10].
Staff from the Faculties of Arts and Business had the most positive view on the helpfulness of the
impact of the new features and tools of Blackboard on their teaching; the Faculty of Science had the
least positive view [see A2.1a].

Tools/Features With Most Helpful Impact on Teaching
The following tools received the highest percentage of staff respondents accepting of the impact of
these tools on their teaching:
o Announcements: 85% (66%) [see A1.6]
o Tools for structuring content: 74% (55%) [see A1.4]
o Emails: 71% (45%) [see A1.6]
o Discussion Boards: 58% (41%) [see A1.7]
The Faculties of Arts and Business had a fewer percentage of staff reporting these tools as having an
unhelpful impact compared to the Faculties of Education and Science [see A2.2]. More Course
Directors found the tools for structuring content unhelpful than neutral, though the number of Course
Directors respondents was small [see A2.3a].

Tools/Features With Least Helpful Impact on Teaching
The following tools received the highest percentage of staff respondents rating them as having an
unhelpful or very unhelpful impact on their teaching:
o Discussion Boards and Chat: 27% [see A1.7]
o Facility for Storing / Managing Content: 26% [see A1.4]
o Tools for Structuring Content, Management Tools (e.g. Calendar, Contacts, Tasks) and Groups:
21% [see A1.4]
o Tools for Creating Content: 20% [see A1.4]
Note that the tools with the least helpful impact on teaching had much lower percentages than the
tools with the most helpful impact on teaching.
A higher proportion of Course Directors found the Discussion Boards, Chat, Management Tools,
Groups and Tools for Creating Content helpful compared to Academic Staff and Subject Coordinators/Convenors (noting the number of Course Directors respondents was small) [see A2.3j,
A2.3m, A2.3d, A2.3e, A2.3b].
Page 3
Interact2 Survey: Key Themes


The newness of the system is reflected in that between a quarter and half of staff could not say the
impact of Management Tools (e.g. Calendar, Contacts, Tasks), Groups, Site Messages, Tests / Surveys /
Quizzes, Course Reports / Statistics, Chat, Adaptive Release, Performance Dashboard and Retention
Centre on their teaching [see A1.5 – A1.9]
The newness of the system is further reflected in that half of staff (or more) could not say the impact
of Wikis, Review Status, Virtual Classroom, Blogs and Achievements on their teaching [see A1.7 – A1.9].
All faculties recorded a proportion of respondents who could not comment on these of above 50% [see
A2.2i, A2.2t, A2.2k, A2.2o].
Course Directors (noting the number of Course Directors respondents was small) had recorded a
proportion of respondents who could not comment on these of below 50% for Wikis, Review Status
[0%], Virtual Classroom, Blogs and Achievements; Academic Staff and Subject Co-ordinators/Convenors
all recorded a proportion of respondents who could not comment on these of above 50% [see A2.3i,
A2.3t, A2.3k, A2.3o].

Open-Ended Question Analysis

Overall, do you have any further comments on the impact of the new features and tools of
Blackboard on your learning experience?
See A3.13 for respondent numbers by theme.




issues with the usability of Interact2 received the most mentions in this question. Some
students reported a lack of consistency in use of Interact2 across lecturers and subjects,
difficulty in navigation within and between subjects, and Interact2 being a “clunky” interface–
especially in comparison to Interact. Students who had used Interact also mentioned missing
the “see who else is online” feature
the Discussion Boards were described by some students as slow, hard-to-use and non-intuitive.
For those students who used Interact the loss of ability to read the posts themselves via email
was cited as a step backwards [Interact2 provides a link to the forum by default, however the
posts can be made visible within email notifications by changing the settings within the subject
site]
students noted the lack of an easy-to-use tool to Print and Download Resources; students also
made mention of resources that were not formatted in print-friendly ways
for the students who found Interact2 positive, the main areas of comment were that
resources and tools/features were together in one spot, Interact2 was easy to use and easy-tonavigate, and the layout and general appearance was appealing -- and an improvement on
Interact
Page 8
Interact2 Survey: Key Themes

The best feature / feature I find most valuable in Blackboard is …
See A3.14 for respondent numbers by theme. Students referenced the ease of usability here, in
addition to tools and features.






the Learning Modules were highly rated as the best Blackboard feature, with learning content,
resources and subject outlines being mentioned the most
the Discussion Boards’ improved look, ease of use and notification of new posts/replies
Announcements, particularly their availability in one place across subjects and easy
accessibility
Grade Centre, particularly its showing of progression through a subject and the ability to view
results in and across subjects in one place
the ease-of-access and use of Lectures / CSU Replay
The feature I find least valuable in Blackboard is …
See A3.15 for respondent numbers by theme. Students generally responded to this question indicating
tools and features they had technical issues with, or tools and features where they believed Interact2
was a backwards step compared to Interact. Students also mentioned usability, technical and
appearance issues here, more than they mentioned the tools [except the Discussion Boards].




the Discussion Boards were mentioned as the least valuable feature by over half of students
who responded to this question [students could and did mention multiple tools]. The main
reasons given were it not being as well laid out and as functional as those in Interact, it being
hard to navigate/follow and not including the actual messages in email notification of new
posts [note that this last feature can be made available by changing the settings within the
subject site]
the lack of general Usability: areas specified by students included the difficulty of use,
confusing structure and the difficulty in finding what you need. Specific aspects of usability
issues mentioned included Navigation: students commented on the need for multiple clicks
and the extended time needed to get to where they wanted, the lack of ability to go back
[especially in the discussion boards], time taken to switch between subject sites and the lack of
an easy method of Printing and Downloading – there were suggestions of the need for a “Print
View” on all pages. Students who used Interact believed Interact2 was more cumbersome to
use
while not a feature or tool, multiple Technical Issues were mentioned by students more times
than all tools/features except Discussion Boards – from Chat not working with certain
browsers, to tools failing, to links that did not work and slow access speed from home
[especially from students in regional and remote locations].
another aspect mentioned was the Appearance and User Interface – students disliked the
following: the layout, new windows opening rather than material opening in the same window,
multiple tabs, a lack of consistency between lecturers/subjects and the lack of ease of mobile
viewing

students who valued the Usability of Interact2 mentioned the Dashboard, including the
PRIMO/library tool, the ease of navigation, the centralisation of information for subjects and
the division of resources and tools to separate sections, the ease of use and switching for
multiple subjects, and the flexibility of the site for lecturers in naming and delivering content
the Appearance of Interact2 was reported as being modern, with a better layout, more visually
appealing and not as cluttered compared to Interact
the support for BYOD and the App was reported as a positive
other positives included the ease of transition and the additional features/tools, with Grade
Centre, Announcements and Tests & Quizzes mentioned specifically
What has been negative about the move to Interact2?
See A3.17 for respondent numbers by theme.





Usability and the loss of ease of navigation – more clicks to get places– as well as a more
cluttered appearance were mentioned by students. Students comparing Interact2 to Interact1
also wanted improved email notifications from discussion boards and to be able to see people
in their subjects and people currently online as they could before.
the Discussion Boards were recorded as being hard to navigate, hard to follow and poorly
designed – and less user-friendly than those in Interact1
Technical Issues, specifically Chat, browser compatibility, slowness of loading and the lack of
notifications received by students
students want enhanced Printing and Downloading functionality – the ability to print or
download an entire module and to fix issues with “print” views for resources and the discussion
boards specifically
Lecturer Knowledge and Consistency Of Use – students reported lecturers and staff being
confused and suggested better training be provided to them, as they were sometimes unable
to provide help with certain features; some student also expressed a desire for consistent
format across subjects/lecturers as different names for tools and layouts across subjects
confused them
