Casual Long Service Leave (for staff in Australia) Division of Human Resources Fact Sheet As a casual staff member am I entitled to Long Service Leave? Yes, subject to meeting the continuous service requirement, casual staff have been entitled to Long Service Leave since the Enterprise Agreements of: 26 October 2000 for academic staff and 22 November 2005 for professional/general staff. When am I entitled to Long Service Leave and how is it administered? The standard service period for staff is 10 years of ‘continuous’ service from the effective date of the appropriate Enterprise Agreement. 62 or more days between casual appointments breaks the continuity of service. i.e. the break stops the clock and if you start a new appointment with CSU after a break of 62 days your service commences from 0 again. If you think you have had 10 years or more continuous casual service with CSU, please email [email protected] for a calculation to be prepared. Please note, Casual Long Service Leave calculations are complex and can take up to 10 working days to complete. What is my Long Service Leave entitlement? A casual staff member that has completed 10 years ‘continuous’ service is entitled to 61 calendar days leave (based on full time equivalent hours or a proportion of 61 days based on service fraction). Please note from 1 March 2014 this calculation will be based on 43.5 working days. After completion of 10 years ‘continuous’ service, long service leave accrues at a rate of 15 calendar days per annum (based on full time equivalent). From 1 March 2014 this accrual will change to 10.75 working days. Does my previous service with other universities count towards my casual long service leave entitlement? No. Prior service is only recognised for the purposes of fixed term and continuing roles at CSU. How is Long Service Leave pay calculated? Long service leave is calculated on the applicable current salary rate (excluding casual loading) and based on the hours worked. The payment rate is individually calculated at the level the LSL was accrued and paid at the current rate for that level as at the date of payment. What is my service fraction? Service fraction is the period of time employed as a casual expressed as a proportion of the hours of a full time employee over the same period. What happens if I have worked two jobs in excess of the standard full time hours/week? A service fraction is limited to a maximum 100%. If your employment time exceeds 100% of course you would be paid for the hours worked but you would not receive entitlement to casual long service leave beyond 100% i.e. equivalent to a full time staff member. What if I am now in a fixed term or continuing role but prior to being appointed I did some casual work for CSU? Provided there is no break in service of more than 62 days between your casual appointment and your new fixed term /continuing appointment the period of casual work that you worked prior to your fixed term or continuing appointment will be added to your service years and your current Long Service Leave balance will be adjusted accordingly. In the event of any discrepancy between this fact sheet and the Enterprise Agreement or Leave Manual, the terms of the Agreement or Leave Manual will prevail. Last reviewed: Jan 2016 Asset ID # 834379 Casual Long Service Leave (for staff in Australia) Division of Human Resources Fact Sheet I previously held a fixed term or continuing position with CSU and started doing some casual work after I left that position. Are those previous years of service recognised for the purposes of casual Long Service Leave? No. Your casual appointment will start your service with CSU anew. No prior service is applicable. I am a part–time staff member and occasionally work additional casual hours. Do these additional casual hours attract a casual long service leave entitlement? As a part-time staff member you are paid for any additional hours you work (up to the maximum FTE) on a casual basis i.e. the hourly rate plus a loading of 25%. Should the amount of casual hours you work on top of your part-time hours amend your service fraction then your current long service leave balance may be adjusted accordingly.
