Year 11 students on campus for a tertiary study day Heather Robinson, head of campus Senior students from James Sheahan Catholic High School were on campus last week for a day spent developing academic skills and exploring career options. Around 125 year 11 students spent the morning honing their study and time management skills with Elevate Education followed by lunch in the student dining area. During the afternoon, the students heard about life as a university student and options for entry to Charles Sturt University (CSU) in a panel session with a team of prospective student advisers and current students. The secondary students had the opportunity to select two hands on workshops from seven career areas on offer, enabling the visitors to participate in course activities under the guidance of experienced CSU staff. Staff from engineering, communications and creative industries, education, physiotherapy, pharmacy, clinical science and nursing offered hands on workshops. Students interested in a career in health were able to experience CSU’s first class simulation facilities at Orange for nursing, pharmacy and physiotherapy. Engineering is the newest addition to CSU courses and will take its first students in 2016. Students got a taste of the practical aspects of the course with a construction challenge involving straws and jelly snakes. Initial feedback from students about the experience has been very positive. Summing up the day, CSU prospective student adviser Katy Fardell said, “It was great to welcome James Sheahan’s year 11 students on to the CSU Orange campus.
