Topic and Title
“Conceptualizing a Topic Area to Research”
Criteria to be considered before embarking on a topic area to
research (Singh, et. al., 2008:5):
1. Interest: The topic chosen should be of some
interest to the researcher to render the research a
rewarding experience instead of one that is
mundane and boring.
2. Added Value: It is of utmost important that the area
researched adds to the existing field of knowledge
and stirs the interest of other researchers in the field.

3. Feasibility: The proposed study should be
conducted and completed within the
resources available in terms of duration,
energy and finance. In other words, the
researcher should fully understand the
constraints and be able to work within them.
4. Benefit: The proposed study should be
beneficial to the field of knowledge or society
and be conducted according to a set code of
ethics.

Research Title
• Title gives the power of first impressions.
• The choice of words is of paramount importance.
• A Working Title: The title can and should be constantly
reviewed after having gone through some of the initial
procedures in the research.
• Must be clear and unambiguous.
• Like a mini abstract to give an overview of the study.
• 12 to 15 words will be sufficient.
• Covers the variables, setting and subjects of the study.
• Should be concise, compact, clear, and correct
