The Tung Ho Visualization Center
is a new science building at Colgate
University in Hamilton. We took the
stairs because we wanted to see the
“Powers of Ten”, etched pictures
along the railings. The artists had to
work with
scientists to
create the
pictures in
the glass.
We needed
the Colgate
students,
Margaret
Swaney,
Veronica
Hanus and
Christian
Rathkopf to
explain what
we were
looking at.

At first, the images were of really,
really, tiny things, so small that you
have to look through a microscope
to see them. As you go up the stairs
the pictures show larger things. The
subjects got bigger and bigger until
they showed two galaxies colliding as
seen by the Hubble Telescope. When
we got to the top the things we saw
were too big to imagine. Continued on page 2

The Tung Ho Visualization Lab
was on the fourth floor. At the top,
we entered this domed theatre. It is
a planetarium. We leaned back in
the big recliner chairs and looked
up while David Terrasas, our host,
showed us how to find things in our
own night sky. He showed us the
Big and Little Dippers, the North
Star, Pegasus and the Eagle Nebula.
He told us the story about the Greek
myth Andromeda as he pointed out
the characters. He moved back and
forth through time.
The feature, “The Wonders of the
Universe”, was an animation about
how scientists think our galaxy was
created. The computer projected it
onto the dome screen. It was going
so fast; it felt like we were traveling
one million light years a minute. We
felt like we were in the middle of
something. It was the big bang. The
dome is a bit like an Imax theatre
except it is a full hemisphere. David
finished the show with a short film
called “Rocket Man”. We all loved
it.

If you haven’t seen any of these
shows yet, you must! Colgate is one
of the great places to learn about
the universe in the USA and it is in
our area. It is also open to the public
for free. Look for the schedule and
reservation pages on the Colgate
University web site. They can take
you to the moon and beyond!

Aliens Came To Town

One beautiful night, a girl
was lying on her hammock
looking at the stars. All of
a sudden, a bright light
came flashing down and
landed in the girl’s back
yard. A door opened and
two aliens walked out. The
aliens were green with two
heads and four eyes on
each head. They had smooth
wet skin. They all started
talking and discovered
even though they lived
galaxies apart; they were a
lot alike. They played a lot
of the same games but they
had different names for them. For example: what earthlings
called football they called

the same likes in food. Like
most young kids, aliens
loved ice cream but called

made plans to play football

cream (shokachoka) once
every year on Earth. Everyone
was sad when the aliens had
to go but were excited about

Aliens Took Over The World were all cramped in there and

One day
while I was
going to
school, I
saw about
one million
disks in the
sky. I told
my mom
but she did
not believe
me. The disks had flashing green
lights, and then it hit me. They
were spaceships! I was so scared!
After school my best friend came
over to my house. I told her about
the spaceships, and she got scared
too. I suggested that we play inside
and she agreed. The next day when
I went outside for recess, I saw
more lights. I think everyone else
saw them too because they were
all looking up at the sky. All of a
sudden giant hands made out of
metal came down toward us. They
grabbed us. We were shouting for
help when bandannas were tied
over our mouths. Then the hands,
sorted us by last name. Some boxes
were full and some were practically
empty. I was put in a box with

my mom, dad and relatives. We
could barely breathe. I noticed the
hands were grabbing boxes and
putting them in an elevator. The box
I was in was next. When we were
almost at the top, I could see lime
green floating heads. It was spooky!
Then, the lights went out and the
heads glowed in the dark, but I
could not see any bodies. All of us
started running. We ran past the
giant hands and jumped out of the
spaceship.
Then we
ran into
the school,
but the
floating
heads
followed
us. Then
the giant
hands grabbed us again and put us
in a large gated area. None of us
had ever seen it before. There were
cameras too. The hands gave us
food and water everyday. This is
how I have been living ever since.

Let us explain the different ways
to find extra solar planets or exoplanets as astronomers are calling
them. First, observe a star wobble.
A star wobbles when a star shakes
and moves because it is pulled on
both sides by a planet’s gravity. The
second way is to notice a breaking
down of the light spectrum.
Scientists can measure the light.
There you have it. Read it and weep
or leap. Any amateur could discover
exo-planets with a small telescope
and a cad camera with special
software to graph the brightness
information.
Maybe you can find the next exoplanet. There are thousands of them.
Life on the Space Station

Today, I will talk about the NASA
space station in outer space and
how the astronauts eat, sleep and
exercise. There is no gravity there
so they do not stay on the ground.
When they eat, their silverware
doesn’t either so that makes it hard
to do. Your silverware can float in
mid air! Drinking is difficult too
and sometimes, the soda comes

How to Find Extra Solar Planets
out of your straw. In outer space,
your bones shrink, so the astronauts
need to exercise for two hours a
day. They must run 30 miles! The
people at the space center have
laptops for entertainment. Their
laptops have pictures of their family
and information useful to help the
program. Also, it does not matter if
they sleep up or down so they have
little sleeping bags hanging from the
ceiling. They keep busy and don’t
get bored. Could you imagine what it
would be like to live in outer space?
Well if you ever do go floating
in space some time, let me know

When I Was Kidnapped By
Aliens

One night when getting ready for
bed, I looked out my window and
saw flashing lights in the sky. I
figured they were on an airplane, but
was I wrong! I took another look out
the window and went to bed. I woke
up at 11 pm, looked out my window
and again saw the flashing lights.
Sure enough, they were still there. I
noticed that the lights were flashing
bright green. I almost made out the
shape of a disk. Could it be what I
thought it was? Was it a spaceship?
I rubbed the sleep out of my eyes.
Was I dreaming? I looked again. I
wasn’t dreaming! There was really
a spaceship outside my bedroom
window! My parents would never
believe me. The spaceship was
now shining a pale green light on
the ground. Before I knew it, I was
staring into the light. I couldn’t take
my eyes off of that green light. I
started to walk toward it and when I
got closer to it a rope dropped down
out of the spaceship and pulled me
up. Once inside, I wasn’t hypnotized

anymore. All of a sudden, I saw
these strange creatures with huge
antennae bigger than their bodies.
The aliens stared at me with great
curiosity. When it seemed that
they could stare at me no longer,
it seemed their eyes were on tiny
springs
that
popped
out of
their
teeny
heads!
Then
as if
things
couldn’t get any grosser, they pulled
the eyes off of the springs and ate
them! One of the aliens offered
an eye to me but I pushed it away.
Little did I know this offer was
a gesture of friendship. All of a
sudden, someone pinched me. Then
I realized that I was just dreaming!
Or was I? There was an alien
standing in front of me. Was I going
to stay in this spaceship forever?
