INFORMATION FOR INDUSTRY PARTNERS
CSU Engineering
Master of Engineering (Civil Systems)
Structure of the Master of Engineering (Civil Systems)
CSU’s program will offer a Masters level
qualification, over 5½ years. The development
of a CSU Engineer will take place through
three phases:
• in the first phase (18 months), the Student
Engineers will be face-to-face at CSU’s
Bathurst Campus, in our state-of-the-art,
purpose-built learning facilities
• in the second phase (2 years), the Student
Engineers will be embedded in industry,
developing their skills in the workplace
while studying the underpinning theory
online through CSU
• in the third phase (2 years), the Student
Engineers will continue working in industry,
but the focus moves from teaching them
the basics to giving them opportunities to
implement and further develop their skills
as professional engineers.
The keystones of the curriculum are already
in place, with highlights including:
• major projects in third and fifth year, where
the Student Engineers tackle a real problem
of benefit to their industry employer and
solve it under the guidance of their manager,
academics and colleagues
• a portfolio capturing experiences that will
provide accelerated progress towards
acquiring competencies of a chartered
professional engineer (CPEng), and
independent practice
• event residential schools where a full year
cohort comes together for a week to solve
real community problems and build networks
of benefit to employers and regions
• international exchange opportunities that
allow the Student Engineers to experience
another culture and bring back new ideas.
The School will be agile, anticipating and
responding to employer and community needs.
The details of the curriculum are being developed
with further fine-tuning as we establish our active
Industry Advisory Board and recruit academic
expertise across a range of disciplines.
Becoming a
Foundation Partner
We are looking for Partners who share our
vision, and are willing to commit to making
it a reality. This is an opportunity to take
regional infrastructure business and expertise
to the world and to develop relationships
and further learn from innovation and
thinking beyond our area.
Companies will host for different reasons
and hosting our Student Engineers within
their workplaces will be one very important
way companies will show their support.
What a CSU Engineering placement
offers your organisation:

the academic community of the university

and outcomes of the project

to future employees
- employ graduates who are
work-ready from day one

infrastructure growth

• possibility of engaging student employees
in ‘pro-bono’, social responsibility activities
that support the local community
• keeping regional tertiary education strong.
CSU Engineering – Hallmarks of Distinction
The CSU Engineering degree will distinguish
itself along five key dimensions:
Entrepreneurial graduates
As the only Australian Engineering School
hosted within a Business faculty, we are able
to bring together technical excellence with
the communications, financial and management
skills that will enhance our graduates’ ability
to make a difference as leaders in the
workplace and society.
4 x one-year embedded work experiences
Our Student Engineers will commence their
studies full-time on our Bathurst Campus
for 18 months. From then on their education
will proceed as employees in industry, while
studying the theoretical curriculum online.
Our Student Engineers won’t just learn
engineering as they study; they will live it.
A diverse cohort
The boutique nature of our program allows
us to proactively ensure that the cohort is
diverse and students learn from the diversity
– we are able to ensure that women,
regional and indigenous students are all
well represented within our student body.
A head start on Chartered status
The additional time offered by a Masters
qualification allows CSU Student Engineers
to achieve much more than the minimum
entry level to the profession. The embedded
work in industry will provide graduates
with opportunities to demonstrate Chartered
Professional Engineer (CPEng) competencies
prior to graduation, fast-tracking their
path to being recognised as autonomous
professionals.
An innovative curriculum
Building a new program from the ground up
allows us to be at the leading edge of educational
technology and pedagogy – our program will
be based on what actually works to meet the
current and future learning needs of our Student
Engineers. An industry advisory board will be
involved in the development of our curriculum.
