Definition of a clause
• A clause is a group of words that form a
grammatical unit that has a subject and a finite
verb
• Example: I hurried because I was late

Two independent clauses (or two sentences) can
be combined using conjunction

The man and the parents put on new clothing. They
went to the girl’s home.
 The man and the parents put on new clothing, and
they went to the girl’s home.

2. For contrasting information, use “but”
The room was big. The room was dark.
The room was big but dark.
The house is big and beautiful. It is too
expensive.
The house is big and beautiful, but it is too
expensive.
He has been working there for 10 years. He
never got promoted.
 He has been working there for 10 years but
(he) never got promoted.

3. For cause-effect information, use “so”, or
“because”
 He is very clever, so he always gets
good grades.
 Because he is very clever, he always gets
good grades.
 He always gets good grades because he is
very clever (note: use no comma)

Conclusions
• Clauses are parts of a sentence that has a
subject and a verb.
• Two independent clauses can be joined by
connectors/conjunctions to form a
sentence.
