Used to
• “Used to” expresses a past situation or
habit that no longer exists at present.
Example: I used to live with my parents.
Now I live in my own house.
Ann used to be afraid of dogs, but
now she likes them.

Question and Negative forms
• Questions:
– Did you use to smoke when you were a
teenager?
– Didn’t you use to live in Tebet?
• Negatives:
– We didn’t use to drink coffee at breakfast.
– I never used to drink coffee at brekfast, but
now I always have coffee at breakfast.

To be/get used to
• There is a huge difference between
– I used to take buses to school.
– I am used to taking buses to school.
• The first sentence means that the person
no longer takes buses to school.
• The second sentence means that the
person has no problem with taking buses
because he does that all the time until
now.
– Note: the form is S +to be + used to + V-ing

Conclusions
• “used to” expresses past habit.
• It does not apply to the present situation.
• “to be/get used to”, in contrast, applies to
actions that still happens. It is used to
express something that the subject doesn’t
mind because of repeated experience.
– Sally didn’t cry when the parents left because
she is used to being left alone at home.
