1
Learning Outcomes
Pada akhir pertemuan ini, diharapkan mahasiswa
akan mampu :
• Menganalisa kesalahan dalam kalimat dan
memperbaiki kesalahan tersebut.
• Menyusun kalimat yang menggunakan
first, second dan zero conditional dengan
benar.
2
Outline Materi
• First Conditional
• Second Conditional
• Zero Conditional
3
First Conditional
• First conditional:
If+ present tense, + future tense
If you leave me, I’ll die of a broken heart.
future tense (no comma) + if + present
tense
I’ll die of a broken heart if you leave me
imperative condition + and + future tense
Leave me and I’ll die of a broken heart.
4
Second Conditional
• Second conditional
• If + past tense, + would + verb
If you left me, I would die of a broken
heart.
• Would + verb (no comma) + if + past tense
I would die of a broken heart if you left
me.
5
Second Conditional
• We use the second conditional for an
imaginary condition, which we believe to
be impossible or very improbable. We use
the past tense although the speaker is
thinking about the present or future:
• If you left me, I’d (would) die of a broken
heart. (but I believe you won’t leave me,
so my heart is safe)
6
Second Conditional
• With I we often use were instead of was in
conditional sentences, especially when we
write. It is more formal:
If I were you, I would write him a letter.
7
Zero Conditional
 Zero conditional
If + present tense, + present tense
If you’re in love, nothing else matters.
present tense (no comma) + if + present
tense
Nothing else matters if you’re in love.
We use this to state general truths:
If you’re in love, nothing else matters.
