Consecutive interpreting
• Definition
– The interpreting in which the speaker pauses
to give the interpreter the time to provide a
translation of everything said up to that point.

– Encoding of information from the Source
Language + Storing Information + Retrieval of
Information + Decoding Information into the
Target language. (Zhong)
– The speaker speaks – pauses for some time
– the interpreted translates – the interpreter
read the translation to the audience

The requirements for Consecutive interpreting
• Note taking : functions and basic
• Functions of note taking
– Provide material (physical) as well as
psychological support for what the
interpreter is going to say
– Insure completeness of information
– Become the memory trigger for the
interpreter

– Maintain the same order as the original
speaker
– Keep the interpreter alert and
concentrating
– Become the supplement to the information
which has been gathered.

Conslusion
• Consecutive interpreting
– The interpreter does not interpret the
message directly because there is a pause
between the speech and the interpreting
• To be able to interpret well, the interpreter
should be able to take notes
• Note taking gives a lot of benefits to either
the interpreter or the committee.
