BACHELOR OF PHARMACY Why study CSU’s Bachelor of Pharmacy? If you are interested in helping improve the quality of life of individuals by delivering optimal pharmaceutical care, then CSU’s Bachelor of Pharmacy is for you. Pharmacists play an important role in providing primary health care for the community, offering advice and assistance to ensure medication is used safely and effectively. CSU’s Bachelor of Pharmacy incorporates diverse practice including community or hospital pharmacy, dispensing, medication management and health counselling to equip graduates with skills for immediate employment. Students may participate in specialist areas of study such as rural health, vaccination training and international programs. The course is studied full-time at Orange Campus over four years. Career opportunities Pharmacy can be a mobile career with flexible hours and opportunities to work in rural and metropolitan environments as well as overseas. Working conditions are generally excellent with great starting salaries. Possessing skills relevant to both rural and metropolitan health care, graduates of CSU’s Bachelor of Pharmacy are in demand by employers, especially in regional areas across Australia. Leaving the city, completing my Pharmacy degree at CSU in Orange and then going on to practice in regional areas has driven me to enjoy regional living. Students study biomedical and applied sciences, develop knowledge and skills in communication and health promotion, learn treatment of minor ailments, and become skilled at health information management. The first three years of the course focus on developing the required basic scientific foundation knowledge, alongside subjects in various pharmaceutical sciences, and provide a solid foundation for studies in the professional aspects of pharmacy. These subject areas include organic and medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical microbiology, pharmaceutics, pharmacology and pharmacokinetics. Workplace learning Students complete periods of professional placement throughout the course, primarily in a hospital or community pharmacy. Professional placement provides an opportunity to work alongside a qualified pharmacist and practise applying theoretical knowledge to real problems in the practice of pharmacy. After graduation, students undertake a period of supervised training, as required of all pharmacy graduates in Australia. This period of pre-registration training is 1,824 hours and is concluded by an examination set by the Pharmacy Board of Australia. When that exam has been passed, you may register and practise pharmacy anywhere in Australia.
