About the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security
Established in 1993, the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security (AGSPS) is globally

Emergency Management at CSU
CSU’s Emergency Management program
is designed to respond to all sectors of
industry, commerce and government that
have an interest in asset management
and asset protection, through furthering
educational opportunities for those working
in the disciplinary field of risk management.
What will I learn?
Emergency management has become
recognised as a distinct field of study that
is required for progression to senior and
executive levels of management in statutory
emergency services, community and health
services, and local government.
EMG401 Risk Management in the
Emergency Management Context
You will learn how risk management in
emergency management can impact
on your practice, from emergency
management planning to emergency
response, follow-up recovery planning
and operations.
Students undertake a study of recent
advances influencing emergency and risk
management through a comprehensive
literature search and analysis.
Students develop their independent
study proposals under the guidance of a
supervisor and their findings are presented
in the form of a training or education report.
The Graduate Certificate in Emergency
Management fully articulates with
the Graduate Diploma of Emergency
Mangaement, which fully articulates with
the Master of Emergency Management.
Students will complete a range of core
and elective subjects to graduate with a
Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or
Master of Emergency Management.
Subjects in the program include:
EMG402 Contemporary Practice in
Emergency Management
This subject addresses the latest
developments, innovation and practices
in the emergency management field, and
emergency management’s place in an
organisational management context.
EMG505 Work Based Project
You will work with support from a
workplace mentor and an academic
supervisor to develop a project improving
a current situation through changes to a
process, policy or practice, resulting in a
report, journal article, training program,
policy recommendation or other outcomes.
EMG506 Current Issues in Emergency
Management
This subject enables you to analyse the
latest literature on advances influencing
management of emergency situations,
in fields like emergency management,
emergency management planning,
operations management or recovery
management.
Electives can be selected from CSU’s
full range of subjects available in AGSPS
programs.

Fire Investigation at CSU
CSU’s Fire Investigation courses aim to
develop and increase the knowledge
and professionalism of fire investigation
practitioners and related professions.
The focus is on investigative practice
through the industry standard NFPA
1033 Professional Qualifications for Fire
Investigator, with specific reference to
NFPA 921 Guide for Fire and Explosion
Investigation.
Initially, course participants are exposed
to current investigative best practice, the
physics of fire behaviour and theories
of deviance associated with fire-setting.
Later studies include gaining specialist
knowledge in areas such as ship / marine
fires, vehicular fires, electrical incidents and
the specialised dynamics and investigative
practice involved with explosion
investigation.
The Graduate Certificate in Fire
Investigation fully articulates with the
Graduate Diploma of Fire Investigation,
which fully articulates with the Master of
Fire Investigation.
What will I learn?
Students will complete a range of core
and elective subjects to graduate with a
Graduate Certificate, Graduate Diploma or
Master of Fire Investigation.
Subjects in the program include:
JST415 Foundations of Fire Investigation
This subject explores the nature of
investigations carried out at fire scenes
to determine the cause and origin of the
fire, including how to preserve the fire
scene, examination, early identification of
fraud indicators and exhibit handling, the
behaviour of fires and occupational health
and safety issues.
JST455 Wildfire Investigation
Students will gain an overview of the issues
around wildfire investigation, including steps
in the initial establishment of wildfire cause
and origin, scene preservation specific to
wildfire, and the elements to be considered
to instigate a formal wildfire investigation.
The subject will also provide an overview of
wildfire arson and the need to engage with
key stakeholders.
JST496 Fire-Setting Behaviour, Legal
Issues and Investigative Practice
You will develop an understanding of
fire-setting behaviour, as well as learn about
court processes and what can legally be
accomplished during an investigation.
JST484 Structures and the
Effects of Fire
You will gain an understanding of the
impact of fire on buildings and building
materials, and fire patterns associated with
different types of fires.
JST488 Specialist Fire Investigation
This subject examines fires involving
explosives and explosions, motor vehicle
fires, electrical fires, and fires involving
ships, boats and the marine environment.
Electives can be selected from CSU’s
full range of subjects available in AGSPS
programs.

GRADUATE PROFILE
Credit and electives
University regulations require you to study a minimum of 50% of core subjects
from your chosen area of specialisation. The balance of your studies is comprised
of elective subjects, which are available in other course areas offered by AGSPS.
Ensuring your study at the AGSPS is flexible and tailored to your career needs, all
subjects taught within the AGSPS are offered as electives in all courses, subject to
Course Coordinator approval.
Various credit arrangements exist for previously completed postgraduate subjects.
Applicants are advised to discuss any potential credit applications with the
Course Coordinator.
