Rebecca Mathern, Registrar From: Azarenko, Anita Nina Sent: Friday, November 30, 2012 4:28 PM To: Williams, Sarah; Beach, Gary Subject: New course prefix- GRAD Good afternoon Sarah and Gary, Happy Friday! The Graduate School would like to create a new course designator, GRAD, for graduate school courses. The Graduate School has developed workshops and a few courses that have relevance across disciplines and contribute to university‐wide graduate learning outcomes. We are in the process of ramping up standalone credit offerings via the Graduate School. Additionally, the pending approval of the Graduate Certificate in College and University Teaching will also generate a need for a more global course designator for the cross‐cutting graduate courses within this curriculum. Moreover, the University is intending to place an increased emphasis on growing graduate student enrollment and new programs in its strategic plan of the next five years. Therefore, we will be increasing our formal educational outreach to insure that core competencies are achieved within this growing population of students. Lastly, we have prioritized objectives to achieve strategic goals for the graduate school. They include: increase our graduate student population to 25% of total university enrollment through recruitment and retention of high achieving students; continuously improve program quality; and grow and invest resources to enhance graduate education opportunities. Creating an explicit graduate school designator will assist in achieving the aforementioned goals and raise awareness of contemporary issues and knowledge that are important for professional success in addition to disciplinary expertise. Students will more easily find the relevant subject matter. Thank you for considering this request. Anita Nina Azarenko Associate Dean Graduate School 300 Kerr Administration Bldg.
