The CARES Safety Center Newsletter Bringing Safety to the Baltimore Community Summer 2011 The CARES Safety Street Center is a "house on wheels" that promotes the safety of children and families by delivering fun, interactive education and affordable safety products to the community. Safety… Will Your Child be Safe this Summer? School is out for the summer and kids are everywhere! This summer, our kids will be playing and having fun in the sun. But if they are not careful, they could get seriously hurt. As grownups, we have to keep an eye on children at play and know how to keep them safe in the streets of our neighborhoods. Did You Know… To request the CARES Safety Center to attend your next event, please fill out our online request form at www.HopkinsCares.org, or call 410-955-4121, or email [email protected]. The Johns Hopkins CARES Safety Center is brought to you by the Center for Injury Research and Policy and the Baltimore City Fire Department. • Each year, about 630 children die from getting hit by a car. • It is hard for young children to know how fast a car is driving. Children under the age of 10, should always cross the street with a grownup. • Children are more likely to get hit by a car between 6pm and 9pm. Tips for Keeping Your Child Safe Never let young children cross the street by themselves, they cannot tell how fast cars are coming. Always watch children when they are playing outside. They should never play in or by the street. Do not let children play or walk by themselves at night. It may be hard for drivers to see them. Always cross the street at a crosswalk. When crossing, always look to the left, right, then left again. When at traffic lights, only cross when you see the walk signal. Remember: Always keep an eye on children at play!
