Description and Purpose: Renee Acosta, RPh, appears with Elizabeth Huss RN, BSN, and
coordinator with the Health Professions Institute of Austin Community College, to discuss
appropriate choice dosage of common non-prescriptive or “over-the-counter” medications. Recent
changes in some common remedies used by parents to treat common children’s illness are
reviewed. The presentation will also provide up-to-date information pertaining to common overthe-counter remedies and precautions to be aware of when counseling health consumers, especially
the parents of children. Ms. Acosta is an instructor for the School of Pharmacy at the University of
Texas at Austin and developer of the Pharmacy Technician Program at Austin Community College
as well as a published author.
The purpose of this activity is to enrich the participant’s contribution to quality healthcare and the
pursuit of professional career goals by providing updated information on the use, interaction
concerns, and precautions needed in the use of over-the-counter drugs.
This offering is a self-paced learning activity developed to meet the individual needs of nurses,
social workers, and emergency medical services personnel requiring continuing education for
relicensure.
Goals and Objectives: Upon completion of this activity, the student will be able to:
1. Describe the dosage changes recommended by the Food and Drug Administration that are
specific to the pediatric population.
2. Identify the dosage formulation changes which have occurred in the concentration of liquid
acetaminophen (Tylenol).
3. Select the appropriate dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen for children, dependent upon the
age/weight of the child.
4. Describe the “meltaway” tablet available for children.
5. Contrast the parameters used to assist parents in choosing between acetaminophen and
ibuprofen in dosing children.
6. List age appropriate dosage for decongestants.
7. Recall the differences between first generation and second generation antihistamines.
8. Identify non-pharmacologic therapy for a patient suffering from allergies or a cold.
9. Describe the two types of cough.
10. Identify antitussive and expectorant active ingredients.
11. Identify non-pharmacologic therapy for a patient suffering from a cough.
Requirements for Successful Completion: The packet you have received contains a pre-test,
DVD, post-test and a program evaluation. To successfully complete this activity and earn
continuing education the participant must:
1. Complete the pre-test
2. View the DVD
3. Complete the post-test (score an 80 or more)
4. And, complete the evaluation

Contact hours for programs applicable to social work are approved for CEU’s by the Texas State

Continuing education for Emergency Medical Personnel is approved by the Texas Department of
