Composition 1
Portfolio Presentation
By: Tony Hart
December 2000
Introduction
I
think I became a much better writer during
this semester. I learned how to write an
effective persuasive paper, a summary, a
comparison essay and a proper introduction
to a paper. The light bulb finally went on
for me.
Changes/Skills Demonstrated
List 6 specific changes in writing or skills
developed this semester. Four are required (see
next slide); two are student options.
 Use the language from the common course
syllabus to identify some of the material to cover
 Use the language from the Ability/Skill/Levels
document—this is what the portfolio should
demonstrate.
 The two above are examples of hyperlinks

Changes in my Writing this Semester
I have learned to write an effective summary.
 I know how to cite sources correctly in my writing.
 I have learned four ways to organize essays.
 I know the essential features of a good thesis statement.
 Student option 1: I have learned how to write self
assessments
 Student option 2: I have learned several effective ways to
write introductions.

I have learned to write an effective
summary.
 The
basics of a summary are not to copy the paper
word for word but rather just inform them of the
main points or details of the paper.
 My example of a summary-High School Football.
 BACK
I know how to cite sources correctly
in my writing.
 The
proper way to cite a source is to follow the
MLA. This is important because you could get
caught for plagiarizing the source if you don’t
document it right.
 My example of correct documentation-Death
Penalty.
 BACK
I have learned four ways to organize
essays.
 The
four ways I learned to organize an
essay are Informative, Persuasive,
Comparison and Contrast, and Summary.
 The essay that was the most enjoyable to
write was the Comparison and Contrast
essay because it was fun to think of the
differences between the two levels of
football I have played at.
 BACK
I know the essential features of a good
thesis statement
A good thesis statement should should have the papers
main points in it and should also grab the reader’s
attention.
 I think one of my best thesis statements was in my paper
about the death penalty. ‘’ The death penalty is a very
good deterrent towards crime.’’ I believe it is an attention
grabber and it states my side toward the death penalty.
 BACK

Student Option 1
I
have learned how to write a self assessment about
the papers I write. I never had to do this before so
it was a new thing for me.
 Self Assessment
 BACK
Student Option 2
I
have learned how to write proper introductions in
all kinds of my papers this semester. An intro
should have your thesis statement and the main
points of your paper
 Example of an Introduction

Conclusion
Link to the expectations of the Writing Skill/Levels 1 & 2.
 My strengths is my ability to write a very good paper
about a topic that I feel very comfortable doing. I think
that if I get to chose the topic I want to write about, it will
be a much better paper.
 I think that my weakness is the lengths of some of my
papers. I cant drag a paper on that I feel like I said
everything that is to say about the paper.
