Edward and Nancy Dodge Lecture
The Edward and Nancy Dodge Lecture is supported
through the R. Edward Dodge, Jr. and Nancy L. Dodge
Family Foundation Endowment, established through the
generosity of Dr. Edward Dodge, MPH ’67, and his late
wife Nancy to provide core funding for the Center for
a Livable Future. We are deeply grateful to the Dodge
family for their longstanding support of the Center, its
programs and activities.

Dr. Jackson is a pediatrician who has served in many
leadership positions in both environmental health and
infectious disease with the California Health Department,
including the highest as the State Health Officer. For nine
years he was Director of the CDC’s National Center for
Environmental Health in Atlanta and received the Presidential
Distinguished Service Award.
While in California he helped establish the California Birth
Defects Monitoring Program and state and national laws to
reduce risks from pesticides, especially to farm workers and
to children. While at CDC he established the national asthma
epidemiology and control program, oversaw the childhood lead
poisoning prevention program, and instituted the federal effort
to “biomonitor” chemical levels in the U.S. population.
Dr. Jackson lectures and speaks on many issues, particularly
those related to the built environment and health. He coauthored two Island Press books: Urban Sprawl and Public
Health in 2004 and Making Healthy Places in 2011. He was
host of the 2012 public television series Designing Healthy
Communities, a companion to the J Wiley & Sons book by the
same name published in October 2011.
Dr. Jackson has served on many environmental and health
boards, and was on the Board of Directors of the American
Institute of Architects. He is an elected honorary member of
both the American Institute of Architects and the American
Society of Landscape Architects.

education, advocacy, policy and communicates about the
complex interrelationships among diet, food production,
environment and human health, to advance an ecological
perspective in reducing threats to the health of the public
and promotes policies that protect health, the global
environment and the ability to sustain life for future
generations.

The Department of Environmental Health Sciences
integrates diverse disciplines in a quest to discover,
disseminate and apply new knowledge critical to
understanding and mitigating the impact of the natural,
built and social environments on human health.
A fundamental aspect of this quest is the education of the
next generation of scientists and practitioners.
