Cloverbud Skills Contests
Cloverbud members may participate in these skills contests; however, the focus of the event is
not competition but rather an educational experience. The objectives of this event are to help
youth gain self-esteem and confidence in their skills, to give them an opportunity to
communicate with adults, and to meet other Cloverbud members. Each participant will receive
a participation ribbon.
Clothing Skills (Ages 5–8) – Stitch on a paper guide
Contest rules:
1. Participants may bring their own sewing machine. Otherwise, a machine will be provided.
2. The judge will meet with the Cloverbud member, but the product will not be judged for a
class placing.
Food Skills (Ages 5–8) – Measuring contest
Contest rules:
1. Participants will demonstrate proper measuring technique by measuring white sugar,
flour, water, and salt for the judge.
2. Participants do not bring any equipment. They may choose to wear an apron, but it is not
required.
3. The judge will talk to the group of Cloverbud members, but the contest is not judged for
class placing.
Non-cooking Skills Contest (Ages 7–8) – Prepare an after-school snack
Contest rules:
1. Participants will prepare an after-school snack that is simple, quick and nutritious. STOVES, OVENS
and MICROWAVES ARE NOT TO BE USED.
2. Members provide all ingredients and equipment except for refrigerator.
3. Just before setting up, provide the judge with:
 Recipe of food to be prepared
 Cost of food to be prepared
4. Provide a poster of the recipe to display in the preparation area. Easel will be provided. Poster
will not be returned. Include 4-H name and contest name on the poster.
5. One hour is allowed for set-up, preparation, and clean-up.
6. Prepare one recipe, one batch, etc. of the food product.
7. Snack is to be displayed on a plate or serving dish. Also, set up one place setting of table
service which could be used with this snack, and a simple centerpiece.
8. Serve a sample of the food to the judge.
