NEW 4-H VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The 4-H program in Hood River County is growing!
Young people throughout the county are discovering
the wonderful things that 4-H has to offer and they
want to become a part of the program. With this

clubs or to help with afterschool programs.
As a volunteer, you can share your interests and
hobbies with youth who may have similar interests.
4-H offers many exciting and different project areas
with information to make your project a success.
If you or someone you know might be interested in
becoming a 4-H Leader or resource volunteer,
please encourage them to call the Extension Office
at 541-386-3343 for more information. We will be
happy to help you fill out the paperwork and get
started in your role as a 4-H Volunteer.

MANDATORY COOL
FORM
4-H and FFA members who will be selling a market animal at the Hood River County Fair
must submit a COOL (Country of Origin Label) form at the mandatory pre-fair weigh-in. The
COOL form must be signed by the person who sells you your animal. This is a federal law
and you will not be allowed to sell your animal at the auction without a COOL form on file.
COOL forms are available in the Extension Office, your leader may have a copy, or you may
download a copy from the 4-H website: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/hoodriver/
BEEF WEIGH-IN
MARCH 7TH
The Steer Pre-Fair Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, March 7 from 8:00 am to 9:30 am at
the Hood River County Fairgrounds. This pre-fair weigh-in is mandatory for all 4-H and FFA
members who are planning to enter their market steer at the Hood River County Fair. If you
have a conflict and are not able to attend, you are required to submit a written excuse before March 7 to the Extension office. Your steer still needs to be weighed and tagged, so
arrangements must be made to have the animal brought to the Pre-Fair Weigh-in and COOL
form turned in.
 All animals must be dehorned and castrated before pre-fair.
 You are responsible for telling the clerk if you are exhibiting this animal in the 4-H or
FFA program.
 Animals must be controlled; double ties are required.
 Turn in a COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) form for each animal.
SHEEP, SWINE &
GOAT WEIGH-IN
MAY 2ND
All 4-H members who plan to exhibit a market sheep, swine or
goat at the Hood River County Fair are required to attend the PreFair Weigh-In on May 2. This is a mandatory event; all market
sheep, swine and goats must be weighed and tagged on this date.
Your COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) form for each animal is
due at the weigh-in.
If you have a conflict and are not able to attend, you are required to submit a written excuse before May 2 to the Extension office. Your animal still needs to be weighed and tagged,
so arrangements must be made to have the animal brought to the Pre-Fair Weigh-in and
COOL form turned in.
MARKET ANIMAL POLICY
1. 4-H/FFA members participating in the beef, sheep, swine and goat market project area may tag two animals of
the same species at the pre-fair weigh-in.
2. If 4-H/FFA members tag two animals, records must be keep on both animals as they are both considered part of
their project.
3. 4-H/FFA members must then decide which animal to bring to fair, as they are only able to bring and weigh one
market animal in each species at the Hood River County fair. (4-H/FFA members are only allowed to sell 3 animals/species total at the Hood River County Livestock Auction.)
4. If the second tagged animal qualifies for a breeding class, the 4-H/FFA member may exhibit in the breeding class.
4-H/FFA records will be required.
5. A 4-H or FFA Member may only sell TWO (2) market animals at the 2014 Hood River County Fair Auction.

member is to provide the following information within 48 hours to the Livestock Auction
Committee:
a. a vet statement on the dead, sick or injured animal prepared by a veterinarian or the
species Fair Superintendent.
b. a statement of support from his/her 4-H leader or FFA advisor regarding the replacement.
c. a summary of the events that lead to the death of the animal.
d. The Fair Superintendent must tag the replacement animal.
3. If replacement is approved by the Livestock Auction Committee:
a. Replacement animal does not qualify for rate of gain contest.
