Hood River County 4-H Newsletter January 2015 HAPPY NEW YEAR! Now is the time to get your club together to plan what you will be working on for the year. We will be offering some great workshops and events throughout the winter and spring. Be sure to read through the newsletter and see what is happening. You don’t want to miss out! Dani Annala Re-Enrollment Forms Due February 1st Clubs, 4-H members and all adult volunteers MUST re-enroll each 4-H year. Re-enrollment forms are due in the Extension Office by February 1st. 4-H Members - The following is a list of items that you need to re-enroll. For the first or only club you enroll in: 4-H Member Enrollment Form Official 4-H Health Form Code of Conduct Form Acknowledgement of Risk & Waiver of Liability form that includes a Media Release $20.00 fee which covers your club fee, insurance and the 4-H participation fee. (Note: some clubs and projects may have an additional materials fee or club dues.) For each additional club you enroll in, you will need: Half sheet Additional Club Member Enrollment Form $1.00 club fee All checks are payable to 4-H Leaders Association LATE FEE: Re-enrollments turned in to the Extension Office after February 1 st will be charged an additional $5.00 for a total of $25.00. (NOTE: Members will need to fill out a current health form and Code of Conduct for additional County events or Camps that they may be attending as the events or camps occur.) Forms for the 2014- 2015 4-H year will be posted to the Hood River County Extension Service 4-H website (http://extension.oregonstate.edu/hoodriver/.) Click on 4-H website left hand column. Teen Leadership Information Columbia Gorge Teen Camp Counselor Training Are you interested in being a camp counselor? No matter if you are interested in counseling for a 4-H camp, outdoor school, sports camp, day camps or any other type of youth camping program, this training is for you. Hood River, Wasco and Sherman Counties is offering a free camp counselor training series for youth in 7 th through 12th grades. Guest presenters will help you learn about being a camp counselor through engaging and hands-on activities. Throughout the program you will: Learn camp games, skits, and songs Define the role of a camp counselor Develop organizational and communication skills Lead group activities Enhance time management skills Practice basic first aid Learn how to supervise and interact with youth Don’t miss this opportunity to enhance your leadership skills and make a difference in youth camping. Hang out with fun people for the weekend Meet new people 2015-16 College Scholarship Information for Senior Members There are two types of 4-H college scholarships: those offered by the State 4-H Office and those offered at the county level. Each has their own application process and deadline. ALL Oregon 4-H scholarship applications must be signed and approved by county Extension 4-H agent, who will then forward them to the State 4-H office. Please let the office know if you plan to apply for the State Scholarships. You will want to pick up or download the application as soon as possible. Applications must be in the Hood River Extension Office by Thursday, February 19th in order to meet the State 4-H office application deadline. Information online: http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/oregon-4h-scholarships Hood River County scholarship applications will be mailed to all qualifying Senior members in early February. Deadline for return is Thursday, April 2nd. 2 Adult Volunteer Information NEW 4-H VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The 4-H program in Hood River County is growing! Young people throughout the county are discovering the wonderful things that 4-H has to offer and they want to become a part of the program. With this growth comes the need for new leaders to start new clubs or to help with afterschool programs. As a volunteer, you can share your interests and hobbies with youth who may have similar interests. 4-H offers many exciting and different project areas with information to make your project a success. If you or someone you know might be interested in becoming a 4-H Leader or resource volunteer, please encourage them to call the Extension Office at 541-386-3343 for more information. We will be happy to help you fill out the paperwork and get started in your role as a 4-H Volunteer. You’d make a great 4-H Volunteer! New 4-H Leader Training 4-H New Leader training will be offered on Tuesday, January 6 from 5:30-7:00 p.m. at the Hood River County OSU Extension Office (2990 Experiment Station Dr., H.R.) This training will provide you with great activities to take back to your club, and also prepare you for a great 4-H year. All leaders must complete the new leader training. If you have recently turned in paperwork to become a leader you must attend this training. Please mark your calendar and look for your postcard invitation in the mail. Be sure to check out our resource kits that are available to you! http://extension.oregonstate.edu/hoodriver/4-h-educational-curriculum-kits 3 Livestock News MANDATORY COOL FORM 4-H and FFA members who will be selling a market animal at the Hood River County Fair must submit a COOL (Country of Origin Label) form at the mandatory pre-fair weigh-in. The COOL form must be signed by the person who sells you your animal. This is a federal law and you will not be allowed to sell your animal at the auction without a COOL form on file. COOL forms are available in the Extension Office, your leader may have a copy, or you may download a copy from the 4-H website: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/hoodriver/ BEEF WEIGH-IN MARCH 7TH The Steer Pre-Fair Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, March 7 from 8:00 am to 9:30 am at the Hood River County Fairgrounds. This pre-fair weigh-in is mandatory for all 4-H and FFA members who are planning to enter their market steer at the Hood River County Fair. If you have a conflict and are not able to attend, you are required to submit a written excuse before March 7 to the Extension office. Your steer still needs to be weighed and tagged, so arrangements must be made to have the animal brought to the Pre-Fair Weigh-in and COOL form turned in. All animals must be dehorned and castrated before pre-fair. You are responsible for telling the clerk if you are exhibiting this animal in the 4-H or FFA program. Animals must be controlled; double ties are required. Turn in a COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) form for each animal. SHEEP, SWINE & GOAT WEIGH-IN MAY 2ND All 4-H members who plan to exhibit a market sheep, swine or goat at the Hood River County Fair are required to attend the PreFair Weigh-In on May 2. This is a mandatory event; all market sheep, swine and goats must be weighed and tagged on this date. Your COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) form for each animal is due at the weigh-in. If you have a conflict and are not able to attend, you are required to submit a written excuse before May 2 to the Extension office. Your animal still needs to be weighed and tagged, so arrangements must be made to have the animal brought to the Pre-Fair Weigh-in and COOL form turned in. MARKET ANIMAL POLICY 1. 4-H/FFA members participating in the beef, sheep, swine and goat market project area may tag two animals of the same species at the pre-fair weigh-in. 2. If 4-H/FFA members tag two animals, records must be keep on both animals as they are both considered part of their project. 3. 4-H/FFA members must then decide which animal to bring to fair, as they are only able to bring and weigh one market animal in each species at the Hood River County fair. (4-H/FFA members are only allowed to sell 3 animals/species total at the Hood River County Livestock Auction.) 4. If the second tagged animal qualifies for a breeding class, the 4-H/FFA member may exhibit in the breeding class. 4-H/FFA records will be required. 5. A 4-H or FFA Member may only sell TWO (2) market animals at the 2014 Hood River County Fair Auction. 4 Livestock News MARKET ANIMAL REPLACEMENT POLICY If a tagged market animal of a 4-H or FFA member should die or become sick/injured: 1. And the 4-H/FFA member has a second tagged animal, they may use that animal. 2. If they do not have a second tagged animal and want to replace the animal, the 4-H/FFA member is to provide the following information within 48 hours to the Livestock Auction Committee: a. a vet statement on the dead, sick or injured animal prepared by a veterinarian or the species Fair Superintendent. b. a statement of support from his/her 4-H leader or FFA advisor regarding the replacement. c. a summary of the events that lead to the death of the animal. d. The Fair Superintendent must tag the replacement animal. 3. If replacement is approved by the Livestock Auction Committee: a. Replacement animal does not qualify for rate of gain contest. b. Replacement animal will sell last in sale order for their ribbon placing (e.g., if it received a blue ribbon, the animal would sell last blue or, if received a red ribbon, the animal would sell last red ribbon animal.) 4. No replacement request will be granted within 10 days of the start of the Hood River County Fair. Bring your own camera or borrow one of ours! This training is designed to train youth in many aspects of babysitting including first-aid, baby care, toddler care, healthy snacks and easy meals for kids to cook and eat, business tips, age appropriate games and safety. Those completing the training will receive a certificate and a wallet sized completion card. $20 Cash or Check at the Door - Everyone April 13, 2015 1:00pm-3:00pm Pickling Vegetables Come learn the basics of pickling vegetables! You don’t want to miss an opportunity to preserve tasty treats. Pickling is not just for cucumbers! 4-H Members - Projects from these workshops may be entered in the Hood River County Fair even if you are not enrolled in the project area. There are many premium county only classes; Window Displays, Textiles for All, Wearable Art, Art for All, Handcrafts & Hobbies, Trash to Treasures Handcrafts & T to T Remodeled Garments, Foods for All, Table Decorating, Photography, and Presentations are all classes where skills learned at a workshop may be applied. 6 MARK YOUR CALENDER 4-H Project Leader Meetings All 4-H volunteers are encouraged to attend meetings related to their project areas. Quarterly 4-H Leader’s Association Meetings - IMPORTANT TO ATTEND Tuesday, January 20 at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 17th at 6:00 p.m. All volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend these leader meetings held in the Extension Annex Meeting Room. Every club needs a voice. Please make sure the primary leader is present or a representative in their place. Email, Social Media and the 4-H Program Email and social media are increasingly important communication tools for the Hood River 4-H program. The 4-H office uses email, Facebook, Instagram and a blog to engage adults and members. A few 4-H clubs also have a Facebook page. If your club would like to set up a club social media page, please review the Social Media Guidelines for Oregon 4-H or contact the Extension Office for help.
