Hood River County 4-H Newsletter January 2016 HAPPY NEW YEAR! Now is the time to get your club together to plan what you will be working on for the year. We will be offering some great workshops and events throughout the winter and spring. Be sure to read through the newsletter and see what is happening. You don’t want to miss out! Re-Enrollment Forms Due February 1st Clubs, 4-H members and all adult volunteers MUST re-enroll each 4-H year. Re-enrollment forms are due in the Extension Office by February 1st. 4-H Members - The following is a list of items that you need to re-enroll. For the first or only club you enroll in: 4-H Member Enrollment Form Official 4-H Health Form Code of Conduct Form Acknowledgement of Risk & Waiver of Liability form that includes a Media Release FEE Schedule $20.00 fee which covers your club fee, insurance and the 4-H participation fee. Family Rate: 2+ members in same immediate family—$40.00 flat rate. (Note: some clubs and projects may have an additional materials fee or club dues.) For each additional club you enroll in, you will need: Half sheet Additional Club Member Enrollment Form $1.00 club fee All checks are payable to 4-H Leaders Association LATE FEE: Re-enrollments turned in to the Extension Office after February 1 st will be charged an additional $5.00 per member even if paying family rate. (NOTE: Members will need to fill out a current health form and Code of Conduct for additional County events or Camps that they may be attending as the events or camps occur.) Enrollment packets for the 2015 - 2016 4-H year are available in the 4-H office and will be posted to the Hood River County Extension Service 4-H website (http://extension.oregonstate.edu/ hoodriver/.) Click on 4-H website left hand column to download. PLEASE USE ONLY TH3 CURRENT HOOD RIVER COUNTY ENROLLMENT FORMS. Please DO NOT use forms from prior years, or other county’s forms or the Oregon State 4-H form. If you have any questions, please contact your 4-H leader or call Debbie at the Extension Office at 541-386-3343 x38252. 4-H Agent Update Interview Process—You are invited……. The initial telephone interviews are complete for the open 4-H Agent position and four candidates have been invited to come to Hood River for a face-to-face interview and a public demonstration where they are each asked to “teach” a 20-25 minute lesson utilizing a 4-H programming component with additional time for questions. You are invited and encouraged to attend the public demonstrations. Here is the schedule: Wednesday, January 20th 9-10 am Candidate Liana Hardin 10-11 am Candidate Karen Pleasant Friday, January 22th 9-10 am Candidate Lena Hosking 10-11 am Candidate Jesse Schneider All of the candidates will be presenting again on Thursday, January 21st at OSU in Corvallis to state 4-H staff. This is a rigorous interview process and we want to make each candidate feel welcome in our county. They have diverse backgrounds, extensive experience, and are coming from all over the United States. Please mark your calendar and join us in the Extension Annex meeting room on January 20th and/or January 22nd. 2016-17 College Scholarship Information for Senior Members There are two types of 4-H college scholarships: those offered by the State 4-H Office and those offered at the county level. Each has their own application process and deadline. ALL Oregon 4-H scholarship applications must be signed and approved by county Extension 4-H agent or representative, who will then forward them to the State 4-H office. Please let the office know if you plan to apply for the State Scholarships. You will want to pick up or download the application as soon as possible. Applications must be in the Hood River Extension Office by Thursday, February 18th in order to meet the State 4-H office application deadline. Call Debbie to reserve a kit—541-3863343 x 38252. 2 Adult Volunteer Information NEW 4-H VOLUNTEERS NEEDED The 4-H program in Hood River County is growing! Young people throughout the county are discovering the wonderful things that 4-H has to offer and they want to become a part of the program. With this growth comes the need for new leaders to start clubs, to be a resource to existing clubs, or to help with afterschool programs. As a volunteer, you can share your interests and hobbies with youth who may have similar interests. 4-H offers many exciting and different project areas with information to make your project a success. If you or someone you know might be interested in becoming a 4-H Leader or resource volunteer, please encourage them to call the Extension Office at 541-3863343 for more information. We will be happy to help you fill out the paperwork and get started in your role as a 4-H Volunteer. You’d make a great 4-H Volunteer! The COOL form must be signed by the person who sells you your animal. You will not be allowed to sell your animal at the auction without a COOL form on file. COOL forms are available in the Extension Office, your leader may have a copy, or you may download a copy from the 4-H website: http://extension.oregonstate.edu/hoodriver/ GENERAL WEIGH IN INFORMATION FOR ALL LARGE ANIMAL SPECIES All animals must be dehorned and castrated before pre-fair. You are responsible for telling the clerk if you are exhibiting this animal in the 4-H or FFA program. Animals must be controlled; double ties are required. Turn in a COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) form for each animal. If the member has a conflict and cannot attend, arrangements must be made to have the animal attend. STEER WEIGH-IN MARCH 5TH The mandatory Steer Pre-Fair Weigh-In will be held on Saturday, March 5 from 8:00 am to 9:30 am at the Hood River County Fairgrounds. If you have a conflict and are not able to attend, you are required to submit a written excuse before March 3 to the Extension office. Your steer still must be weighed and tagged. SHEEP, SWINE & GOAT WEIGH-IN MAY 7TH This is a mandatory event; all market sheep, swine and goats must be weighed and tagged on this date. If you have a conflict and are not able to attend, you are required to submit a written excuse before May 5 to the Extension office. Your animal still needs to be weighed and tagged. MARKET ANIMAL POLICY 1. 4-H/FFA members participating in the beef, sheep, swine and goat market project area may tag two animals of the same species at the pre-fair weigh-in. 2. If 4-H/FFA members tag two animals, records must be keep on both animals as they are both considered part of their project. 3. 4-H/FFA members must then decide which animal to bring to fair, as they are only able to bring and weigh one market animal in each species at the Hood River County fair. (4-H/FFA members are only allowed to sell 3 animals/species total at the Hood River County Livestock Auction.) 4. If the second tagged animal qualifies for a breeding class, the 4-H/FFA member may exhibit in the breeding class. 4-H/FFA records will be required. 5. A 4-H or FFA Member may only sell TWO (2) market animals at the 2016 Hood River County Fair Auction. 4 Livestock News MARKET ANIMAL REPLACEMENT POLICY If a tagged market animal of a 4-H or FFA member should die or become sick/injured: 1. And the 4-H/FFA member has a second tagged animal, they may enter that animal. 2. If they do not have a second tagged animal and want to replace the animal, the 4-H/FFA member is to provide the following information within 48 hours of the to the Livestock Auction Committee: a. a vet statement on the dead, sick or injured animal prepared by a veterinarian or the species Fair Superintendent. b. a statement of support from his/her 4-H leader or FFA advisor regarding the replacement. c. a summary of the events that lead to the death of the animal. d. The Fair Superintendent must tag the replacement animal. 3. If replacement is approved by the Livestock Auction Committee: a. Replacement animal does not qualify for rate of gain contest. b. Replacement animal will sell last in sale order for their ribbon placing (e.g., if it received a blue ribbon, the animal would sell last blue or, if received a red ribbon, the animal would sell last red ribbon animal.) 4. No replacement request will be granted within 10 days of the start of the Hood River County Fair. What happens if re-enrollments are not turned in by February 1st? Members and leaders will not be covered by 4-H activity insurance. Members and leaders will no longer receive information or communications about 4-H events and activities. Members might not be able to exhibit at the County Fair as a 4-H member. Late enrollments will be charged a $5.00 late fee for each member. Email, Social Media and the 4-H Program Email and social media are increasingly important communication tools for the Hood River 4-H program. The 4-H office uses email, Facebook, Instagram and a blog to engage adults and members. A few 4-H clubs also have a Facebook page. If your club would like to set up a club social media page, please review the Social Media Guidelines for Oregon 4-H or contact the Extension Office for help.
