Courses taught:
PhD Course work class on literature review, style of referencing and qualitative techniques of data
collection and analysis (in Geography)
PG: Socio-economic-cultural geography, regional planning, research methods in human geography (both
theoretical and practical)
Guiding of dissertation in MA/MSc:
Each PG student under the special paper (optional) of Micro regional planning independently submits a
dissertation on socio, economic or cultural aspect as per the syllabus. The different issues taken up
included studies on tribal community in forest area; on agricultural scenario of a tribal village; on rural
hats, on a handloom cluster, on food security of a weaving community, on tourism aspect, on issues
concerning the building of a dam, on impact of Aila , on impact of Micro Credit on standard of living
and poverty alleviation. Issues on border areas have also been guided. Studies have also been focussed
on the aged, and on child labour. Gender studies covered women’s participation in a weaving
community, in agriculture, in shrimp farming , on their political participation and on Self help group
formations. Local areas have been studied focussing on the socio economic and cultural transformation
of Berunanpukuria, on the rural urban transformation along Barasat-Barrackpore road . Urban studies
have been made on a ward level in some municipalities. Development of Barasat municipality since its
evolution was also done with emphasis on residential growth and on shopping malls. Studies on
university students included that of impact of IT sector and on women’s perception on higher education.
Research Interests
Archival research and qualitative research including participatory appraisal, participation and direct
observation, focussed group discussion , surveys and interview strategies.
Human development issues particularly on the aged, women children and other marginalized sections
particularly the tribals ; on their empowerment and community participation.
Rural development: socio- cultural and economic perspective.
Local perspectives on development: rural &urban & Micro regional studies of rural &urban areas.
