Affordable Learning Solutions (AL$) (http://library.csun.edu/guides/AffordableLearningSolutions) Borchard provided an overview of the Affordable Learning Solution initiative, which assists CSU faculty to choose and adopt high-‐quality, free or low-‐cost course materials, including Open Educational Resources (OER). CSUN requested and received $20,000 from the CSU Chancellor’s Office this year to support Affordable Learning Solutions on campus. With the new textbook affordability act and the ATC resolution on Affordable Learning Solutions, the next step will be the writing of a plan and a proposal to receive additional funding. An upcoming conference in March will provide information on how to help CSUN prepare to request funding. Two instructional designers, Klemm, and Borchard and one instructional designers from the Faculty Technology Center will attend the conference. An update on the development of the plan and the focus will be provided to ATC following the conference. Sales stated that the campus already has tools and resources. Dermendjian stated that it would be helpful to educate faculty on ways to avoid requiring the latest textbook versions because often the older editions cost significantly less and include all necessary content. Kutay shared that the Library utilizes Campus Quality Fee funding to purchase the current versions of the textbooks to place on reserve. Schutte shared that a former CSUN student has developed a program that extracts content from textbooks and converts into modules for tests and quizzes, avoiding copyright issues. b. College Disrupted – (http://hdl.handle.net/10211.3/161509) Schutte shared a presentation inspired by the “Perspectives On How Technology Is Changing the College Education Model” article, published by The Chronicle of Higher Education (2015). The presentation focused on the main issues in higher education, disrupted innovations, and outlined the unattended consequences. c. CSU Learning Platform System evaluation. Zell shared that she was appointed as the CSUN representative for the CSU Learning Platform and Services Taskforce (http://csulps.com/). The taskforce is evaluating a range of Learning Managing Systems (LMS) this semester and a recommendation will be made to the Chancellor’s Office as to which Learning Management Systems deserve an MEA that can be utilized by all 23 campuses. Zell shared that Provost Li recently invited faculty to join an affinity group to participate in all of the webinars, review criteria, and write a report back on whether the campus should consider an alternative LMS to Moodle. Zell asked the group to contact her if they are interested in participating. The formal evaluation process is expected to begin in March. The list of webinars and scheduled will be shared with the ATC and ERC committees once the dates are been finalized. d. CSUN Zoom video and web conference software rollout (https://csun.zoom.us/) – Zell and Perez provided a demonstration of the new CSUN Zoom video and web conference tool available for all CSUN students, faculty and staff. Zell shared that Zoom will replace Elluminate/Collaborate at the end of this semester. Perez added that the tool is integrated with Moodle and that it has the capability of screen sharing, audio and video for up to 200 participants at a time. Zoom is accessible from any device with Internet access. Zoom will be installed on all university computers in February and an app needs to be downloaded to use Zoom on a mobile device. Peri inquired if faculty can request a captionist for Zoom for office hours. Perez noted that Tseng College provides that service for their faculty and noted that it would probably be covered by an ADA accessibility accommodation request for other colleges. Perez noted that links to video stored in either myCSUNbox or YouTube could be shared with students. Baker asked the committees for suggestions about how best to inform faculty about Zoom. Dermendjian shared that it would be helpful to demonstrate the tool at the College Administrative Council meetings. Krantz stated that the information could be shared with the department Chairs for them to mention during the faculty meetings. Schutte stated that CSU Chancellor White’s open forum could be shared with campus via Zoom to encourage more faculty, staff and students to use the tool. Kutay offered to add a Library website banner about Zoom. 4. ATC Chair’s Report a. ERC Chair’s Report a. Dermendjian provided a summary of the ERC’s agenda items this year noting that the committee has studied the affects of how impaction will affect enrollment. ERC previously reviewed the sustainability report prepared by Dr. Stepanek and Provost Hellenbrand. The committee has also discussed the topic of graduate students taking 300 and 400 level courses, usually when they previously obtained a bachelor’s degree in a different field. Dermendjian added that Vice President Donahue met with the committee and will return to present later this semester. ERC has also discussed student success and possible grade inflation if it campuses are measured based on the four year graduation rate. Dermendjian noted that this is a matter of quality versus quantity and the concerns have been shared with Provost Li. 6. VP/CIO’s Report a.
