Welcome to
Human Anatomy and Physiology
Mrs. Westphal
Martin High School
www.mrswestphal.weebly.com
This course offers basic concepts in human anatomical structure and physiology with relation to body functions.
It includes all major body systems in regards to gross anatomy and function as it relates to homeostasis. Students
will foster these skills within a cooperative framework, as there will be extensive group work. As a part of the
course, the dissection of a fetal pig, in addition to various organs, will be required. Students are expected to
participate in all lab activities.
Class Expectations:
During class, I expect you to follow the PRIDE expectations. I expect every student to be:
P – Prepared (always having what you need for the task at hand)
R – Respectful (treat others, myself, and this room as you would like others to treat you.)
I – Integrity (honest and moral choices)
D – Dependable (being responsible, consistent for your work)
E – Envision the future (preparing for the future, making goals, and setting yourself up for the future)
This includes, but is not limited to, coming to class with a pen or pencil, planner, binder, and textbook, having
your homework completed on time and ready to turn in, following individual instructions, ask questions when
you do not understand something, fill out your planner, completing your own assignment, knowing the
difference between helping and cheating, be responsible for work you missed when absent, and working for
success. These policies are consistent with and include all policies outlined in the student handbook. If
classroom expectations are not met, students can expect the following consequences:
1st offense: Written Warning
2nd Offense: Written Warning AND
Teacher/Student Conference
Possible Seat Change
3rd Offense: 1/2 hour after school
4th Offense: Office Referral
Students will be allowed one verbal warning each day to remind them of proper behavior. A copy of written
warnings will be given to the students and mailed home to the parent, with an additional copy remaining in the
classroom for records. However, more serious offenses, class one and two, will be dealt with on an individual
basis and may result in an automatic office referral.
Also, due the laboratory nature of this course, there is to be NO FOOD in class. Also, drinks are only allowed in
re-sealable containers. This is a health and safety issue.
Students are expected to come prepared to class with a writing utensil, portfolio, and book. If a student comes
to class unprepared, that student will be considered tardy. In addition, students must be in their seat when the
bell rings to be considered on time. Running into the room as the bell rings will result in a tardy.
There are three hall passes allowed per marking period. Students will receive tickets for these passes at the
beginning of each marking period. These tickets are necessary in order to leave the classroom. Any student
with hall passes remaining at the end of the marking period will be eligible for extra credit. Hall passes may not
be used to excuse a tardy.
ALL electronic devices must be OFF and out of sight before entering this classroom. If you are caught with your
cell phone, ipod, etc: (These consequences roll over each marking period.)
 First Offense: You will be asked to turn it off and put it away.
 Second Offense: Your phone will be confiscated and can be picked up at the end of the school day.
 Third (and beyond) Offense: Your phone will be confiscated and must be picked up by a parent/guardian
and a referral will be written resulting, most likely, in a Wednesday school.
Grading Policy:
This class will be separated into approximately 6 units, based on various body functions. Students’ marking
period grades will be based on participation, in-class and out of class assignments, quizzes, projects, and unit
exams. The grade will be based on the following:
 Assignments and Quizzes =
60%
 Unit Exams and Projects =
30%
 Participation=
10%
This class will be very lab intensive. Expect to perform and analyze labs several times per week. Your
participation in lab is expected and a major part of your grade
Final Semester Grades will be cumulative, based on both quarters:
1st MP (40%) + 2nd MP (40%) + Semester Exam (20%) = Final Grade
Retakes/Make Up Policy:
 Assignments not turned in on time will lose 25% for everyday they are late, up to 50% off. Missing
assignments may be turned in up to 1 week before the end of the marking period for 50% credit. No late
assignments will be accepted after that.
 Any assignment or quiz can be retaken once in the student is unhappy with the grade received. The final
grade with the average of the scores. Retakes must be completed within one week of receiving the graded
assignment back.
 Students are allowed one day for everyday absent to make up the work missed. There is a calendar in the
room for each class along with any handouts available to returning students. Alternative assignments may
be given to students missing on a particular lab day.
 Any quiz, test or exam that has been posted in the room prior to the quiz/test, must be taken on the
posted date.
 Attendance issues are highly discouraged. It is recommended, due to the nature of the course, that
students miss as little as possible. If a student is required to buyback time, an extensive research paper
will be required.
Other Information:
As a part of this course, students will be exploring the how the human body is put together and how those
parts function. This will include a unit on human reproduction and fetal development.
Necessary Supplies:
I ask that each student get a 3 ring binder (at least 1 inch, although a larger one is recommended) and
dividers to be used as a portfolio. The portfolio will be graded at the end of the semester and considered an
exam grade. The contents of the portfolio will be discussed in class.
I look forward to this new school year, and hope we can enjoy our exploration into the human body.
