Investment objective
Information
The investment objective of the Hereford Funds - Firth Asian Value Fund is to generate long term capital growth from a portfolio of listed
company securities in Asia (ex- Japan).
Firth Investment, the Investment Manager, aims to exploit the opportunities and pricing inefficiencies in listed smaller capitalization stocks
throughout Asia (excluding Japan, Australia and New Zealand). They are active managers and employ a long-only value approach to
investment. The investment process has been developed as a result of their own research and experience with the asset class.
The focus is on stock selection. They generate their own ideas, conduct their own research, and scour the region for companies which are
being ignored by other investors, usually those with a market value below US$1 billion. The emphasis is on what they pay for a stock and the
qualities of a company that they get in return for what they pay. They look for balance sheet strength and aim to invest in cheap stocks where
there is a reasonable probability of positive change.
The Investment Manager takes a conservative approach to portfolio construction, with the aim of avoiding extreme outcomes and permanent
loss of capital. They do not hedge against market risk or use cash levels deliberately to vary exposure to the market.
September 2015 investment review
In September 2015 the total return of the Fund after deducting all fees and expenses was -0.6%. By comparison the total return of the MSCI AC
Asia ex Japan Small Cap index was 0.6% and the total return of the MSCI AC Asia ex Japan index was -1.8%.
Following two months of rapidly falling prices, September provided some respite although the fund value was still slightly lower by the end of the
month. In the third quarter as a whole the fund was resilient compared to our benchmark index (down c.12%, while the index fell c.17%). Our
“value” bias, low exposure to financials and commodity stocks, and a high cash balance all contributed to this result.
In September Taiwan was the best performing market (+5%), Indonesia (-10%) and the Philippines (-7%) the worst. Currency weakness
continued in Indonesia and the Philippines where both currencies fell 4%, while the only currency to gain ground was the Indian rupee (+1%).
The performance of small companies compared to the wider regional index has been more “nuanced”. This month and this year smaller
companies have outperformed large caps. One might expect smaller companies to be hit harder due to their illiquidity and perceived exposure
to intra-regional problems. One possible explanation is that ETFs and similar instruments have been sold heavily as investors have looked to
raise cash quickly, and no tradeable equivalent exists for the small cap sector.
