EDEN Seminar on Research Methods in Operations Management – A Long-Time Success Story
The EDEN Seminar on Research Methods in Operations Management kicks off EIASM's EDEN programme every year.
Organised in collaboration with the European Operations Management Association (EurOMA), earlier this month 28 PhD students
from all over Europe participated in the 2016 EDEN Seminar on Research Methods in Operations Management (OM). Since its inception,
the EDEN Seminar on OM has seen over 450 participants – a great success story in contributing to the development of research skills
within the Operations Management community.
The week-long seminar is a wonderful opportunity for PhD students to get a broad overview of various research approaches. In addition to
addressing the key decisions involved in the research process, the seminar gives participants insights into the characteristics of four
distinct research methodologies: simulation and modeling, surveys, case studies, and action research. The seminar features input from
leading OM scholars, each one an expert on a particular research approach.
The goal of the EDEN Seminar on OM is to foster the abilities of PhD students to make better-informed methodological choices by teaching
them when to use various methodologies as well as the strengths and weaknesses of each methodology. By introducing several research
approaches – and putting these into an Operations Management context – students are sensitised to the key characteristics of each
research approach and what it takes to do high-quality research.
The seminar is also a great opportunity for networking! Participants from Europe and abroad are able to meet and discuss the mutual
problems facing PhD students – and, of course, gain invaluable feedback on their respective research projects in a friendly and focused
setting.

AFDEN – The AFAANZ Doctoral Education Network (AFDEN)
AFDEN – The AFAANZ Doctoral Education Network (AFDEN)
In the spirit of EIASM’s EDEN, the Accounting and Finance Association of Australia and New Zealand (AFAANZ)
initiated the AFAANZ Doctoral Education Network (AFDEN) in 2015. AFDEN aims to facilitate network universities
in offering a rich suite of doctoral-level subjects suitable for accounting and finance students during their first year of
study in the Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) region. The primary goal is to provide all such PhD candidates the
opportunity to develop world-class research skills and knowledge, helping to better prepare them to (a) produce high
quality dissertations; and (b) enter an academic career path.
In 2015, AFDEN facilitated four course offerings from network universities – three offered by the University of
Queensland: finance theory; finance empirical; the research process – and one by the University of Sydney: behavioural
finance. In 2016, these four courses will be augmented by several new accounting courses, including “Current Issues in
Corporate Governance, Financial Accounting and Economics of Auditing” offered by the University of Technology
Sydney.
AFAANZ recognises that a critical impediment to the success of AFDEN is the “tyranny of distance” and, particularly, the
related issue of nontrivial travel costs. Accordingly, to help overcome this obstacle, AFDEN offers a generous number of
travel Scholarship awards (to “AFDEN Scholars”). Each scholarship is currently funded up to the value of $AU1500.
Professor Robert Faff (UQ Business School) is the inaugural Director of AFDEN. As a complement to AFDEN, students
are encouraged to consider the rich vein of doctoral training opportunities offered through EIASM’s EDEN program. For

New EIASM Workshop: 1st Workshop on Governance and Management of Digitization
The inaugural EIASM Workshop on Governance and Management of Digitization aims to address the interdisciplinary nature of
this challenging subject by inviting contributions from scholars of corporate governance, strategy, innovation, risk management, and
information technology, who conduct research on topics related to digital innovation and transformation.
The 1st Workshop on Governance and Management of Digitization will be organized into four tracks:
Track I: The strategy governance perspective (chaired by Michael Hilb - Switzerland)
Track II: The innovation governance perspective (chaired by Lucy Küng - U.K.)
Track III: The inform ation technology (I T) governance perspective (chaired by by Kathrin Moeslein - Germany)
Track IV: The risk governance perspective (chaired by Laura Georg - Norway)

Report on the 5th EIASM Workshop on Managing Cultural Organisations
The EIASM Workshop on Managing Cultural Organisations held in Bologna last December was a very interesting gathering of
academic research, on a topic that is too often left aside in mainstream management conferences. Yet, arts and cultural organizations are
often at the edge of management innovation regarding business model, audience participation, scarce resource management… This is why
this workshop was very valuable to me.
Among the things that I valued best in this workshop were the following:
The size of the workshop is reasonable, so that scholars can attend most of the presentations without having to choose between
competing tracks. There were approximately 30 to 40 scholars attending, which enables everyone to get to know most of the
participants.
The overall quality of presentations and papers was really high – and definitely higher than in larger Arts Management conferences.
Most sessions were dedicated to specific research questions or settings with a valuable cohesion and connection between papers.
For instance, there were several sessions on Museums with highly interesting articles.
The format of presentation enabled discussions: 25 minutes presentation then 20 minutes discussion for each paper. This allowed
presenters to gain feedback, comments, critical questions, and to raise more general debates that could be of interest to many
participants. Also, the fact that PhD students were integrated into the workshop amongst more senior participants made the
workshop of considerable value for them, in my opinion.
The origin of scholars was wide, mostly from European countries. This point is of importance, as discussions revealed the rise of a
European perspective on arts management that will need to be further strengthened in order to address specific issues and
practices, which are often different from US practices of arts management, for instance.
The organization itself was well-designed, smooth and friendly. Organizers were welcoming and caring, and Bologna is a great
university city in which to organize such workshops.
Overall, my opinion is that this conference should not be held only once every 4 years, but more regularly.

RENT XXX - Research in Entrepreneurship Conference
The very first workshop on Research in Entrepreneurship and Small Business (RENT) that was organised by EIASM in 1987 in
Brussels, was an initiative of Professor Rik Donckels (at that time at the Katholieke Universiteit Brussel, KUB) and Professor Asko Miettinen
(at that time at the Helsinki School of Economics). Both Chairs were affiliated Faculty Members of EIASM. Starting with the first meeting,
the workshop was extremely successful – and has continued to be so ever since.
The RENT Conference is for years now co-organised together with the ECSB (European Council for Small Business and
Entrepreneurship)
Over the years, RENT Conferences have been organised all around Europe, and have covered a variety of topics in the field of
entrepreneurship and small business. The papers have dealt with topics such as: Structures in Small Enterprises, SMEs in Developing and
Transition Countries, Problems of Financing in SMEs, Growth and SMEs, Women in Entrepreneurship, Teaching Entrepreneurship, and
Training in Management in SMEs.
For its 30th anniversary, the RENT Conference comes back to Belgium and will take place in Antwerp on November 16-18, 2016.
With its main theme as "I nnovation, Relational N etw orks, Technology and Know ledge Transfer as Drivers of Global
Com petitiveness" , RENT XXX will focus on how networks and knowledge transfer can help firms increase their global competitiveness
by fostering innovative and entrepreneurial behaviour.
Quantitative and qualitative papers are both welcome, especially if they are presenting research issues emerging from intersections of
different knowledge pools.

JMAR Call for Papers on Management Accounting Survey Research (Special Issue)

The Journal of M anagem ent Accounting Research (JM AR) invites submissions for a special issue devoted to survey research. The
objectives of this issue are threefold. First, we seek to publish rigorous and innovative survey-based research that extends our
understanding of important questions and provides a test of theory. Second, we also seek studies that provided in-depth descriptions of
current practices in the field of management accounting and control that will help steer the future direction of management accounting
research and facilitate the development of new theories. Such studies should go beyond describing common practices and should provide
interesting insights that either shed thought-provoking new light on inferences of prior research, or that reveal real-world phenomenon in
need of additional research. Lastly, we seek discussion articles that set forth best practices for the ‘doing’ of survey research or that
examine methodological issues associated with such studies.
Papers advancing to the 2nd round of review for the special issue will receive automatic acceptance to the EIASM 9th Conference on
Performance Measurement and Management Control to take place in Nice, France, on September 13-15, 2017. (Conference
attendance not required for acceptance in the special issue.)

CIMA Launches New Topic-Specific Funding Initiative
The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) has launched a new Topic-Specific Funding I nitiative .
Funding is available from £5,000 to £40,000 and is being offered for projects which explore issues in the field of management accounting
within one of the three following topics:
Stewardship & Trust
Costing
Analytics
CIMA is also currently offering seedcorn funding of up to £5,000 to
- early career researchers
- experienced researchers looking to undertake feasibility studies
