EIASM Interdisciplinary Leader Award
– CALL FOR NOMINATIONS –
EIASM Interdisciplinary Leader Award
The European Institute for Advanced Studies in Management (EIASM) is launching a new award to acknowledge individuals who have
made exemplary contributions in interdisciplinary research and applications. EIASM believes that interdisciplinarity is needed to ensure
that theory-building, empirical research, education, and institution-building in management, integrate knowledge and progress in an era
of increasing specialization. This is essential to further develop management as a field that is able to advance theoretically, to provide
relevant knowledge for students and practitioners, and to ultimately help to deal with the grand and highly complex challenges of
contemporary society.
This new EIASM award is meant to honour the work of exemplary scholarship and/or institutional leadership. This may be shown by the
following: promoting specific cross-disciplinary streams of research; developing new interdisciplinary theories or methods; applying ideas,
theories or methods from other sciences; interdisciplinary education or pedagogical innovations; applying interdisciplinary ideas in
practice; facilitating dialogue across disciplines or sciences; exceptional service for academic societies or associations; serving as an
example for others in promoting interdisciplinarity, diversity and/or pluralism across management studies.
The EIASM Board is calling for nominations for the EIASM Interdisciplinary Leader Award to be submitted via email to EIASM’s
Managing Director Nicole Coopman ([email protected]) by December 31, 2015. Nominations should include a letter from the
main nominator stating the grounds for the nomination, together with at least three letters of support from other nominators, as well as
the CV of the nominee.
An announcement of the award-winner will be made by the EIASM Board in the spring of 2016, followed by a special event (to be the
hosted by EIASM in Brussels in September 2016) featuring a talk by the winner, to be made to members of the EIASM Academic Council.
The award-winner will also receive a €5,000 monetary prize.

Report on the 1st EIASM EDEN-CIMA Course held in Malaysia - A Success Story
On October 20-22, 2015, the 1st EIASM EDEN-CIMA Course on "Doing Management Accounting Research: Towards
Excellence" took place in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This event was fully sponsored by the Chartered Institute of Management
Accountants (CIMA), whose partnership and support we gratefully acknowledge.
The Chairs, Prof. Chris Chapman (Copenhagen Business School) and Prof. Wai Fong Chua (University of New South Wales), selected
30 applications out of the 55 that were received. The course focused on establishing the domain of management accounting as a topic for
research. As well as seeking to provide a grounding in the kinds of issues that typically comprise management accounting research, a
significant emphasis was placed on developing an understanding the diversity of research approaches that may be undertaken in seeking
to understand management accounting phenomena. A key learning objective of the programme was to develop a sensitivity to issues of
method and methodology that underpin the knowledge claims at stake in academic research in management accounting.
An intensive and interactive course consisting of pre-class readings, lectures, discussions, team work groups, participant & team
presentations, and post-class assignments. An invaluable experience!

Report on the 11th Workshop on Intangibles, Intellectual Capital & Extra-Financial Information
On September 17-18, 2015, the 11th Interdisciplinary EIASM Workshop on “Intangibles, Intellectual Capital and
Extra-Financial Information” took place at the Athens University of Economics and Business in Greece. The venue was chosen
considering its strategic orientation to serve as a center of education and scientific excellence as well as a source of intellectual wealth for
the country, especially in the difficult times that Greece is currently experiencing.
The Workshop was jointly coordinated and chaired by Prof. Sandra Cohen (Athens University of Economics and Business – AUEB) and
Prof. Stefano Zambon (University of Ferrara), who welcomed about 70 delegates from 17 different countries.

Report on the 8th Conference on Performance Measurement and Management Control
The 8th Conference on Performance Measurement and Management Control organized by EIASM was held September 30–
October 2, 2015. About 200 papers were submitted to the conference, and 115 papers were selected for presentation. In total, 161
participants from 33 countries were present at the conference. Amongst the countries with the most participants were Finland (18),
Germany (14) and the USA (14). However, there were representatives of countries from each continent, including Brazil, Australia, China
and Egypt.
There were several papers on ‘established topics’ such as performance measurement and (configurations of) control (not surprising,
considering the theme of the conference). A significant number of papers were from the public sector, including higher education and
health care. Also, several papers discussed the (perceived?) tension between innovation and control. Some upcoming topics included the
‘dark side’ of controls, informal controls, and technology and controls (including controls in virtual teams).
For this conference, a new approach was explored by accepting two types of submissions. Participants had been asked to self-select into
one of two types of presentations in order to provide support to scholars who have little experience writing for and publishing in
international journals. The first type of workshop was intended for scholars who are (relatively) new at publishing in international
English-language journals. Papers selected for these sessions had a shorter presentation time to allow for more feedback from a
discussant with experience in publishing in international journals. The purpose of these workshops was to help the community of
emerging international scholars better prepare papers for international journals. The second type of workshop was intended for those with
more experience in publishing in international journals. Consistent with past conferences, these authors had more time to present their
paper with the purpose of stimulating audience participation. From the reactions of participants, we understand that this novelty was
generally appreciated.
In addition to the parallel sessions, there were 3 plenary sessions. Marc Epstein discussed the critical role of management control
systems for breakthrough innovations. Amongst others, Marc shared several examples of how innovative companies (including Apple) use
control systems. Another panel session included several editors and co-editors from international journals: Mary Malina, Co-Editor of
Advances in Management Accounting; Karen Sedatole, incoming editor of Jourmal of Management Accounting Research; and Marc
Wouters, who is on the editoral Boards of Accounting, Organizations and Society and Management Accounting Research. The panel
session was moderated by Sally Widener; it gave participants the opportunity to ask questions on how to improve their chances on
publishing in the international journals. Finally, Sally gave a plenary session on the world of complex control, and how ethics and control
systems can be integrated.

Report on the 3rd Workshop on Diversity Issues, Aging and New Work-Life Practices
During a two-day event held October 15-16, 2015, at EIASM in Brussels, "Aging and New Work-life Practices" was discussed at the 3rd
Workshop on Diversity Issues. The 1st and 2nd editions of this workshop focused on gender, whereas this event, as indicated in the
title, was on age. Professors Iiris Aaltio (Jyväskylä, School of Business and Economics, Finland) and Elisabeth Sundin (Department of
Management and Engineering, Linköping University, Sweden) were the chairpersons.
Although 'age' is a concern that every individual has, the term seems to most often relate to 'old age' – as evidenced by the contributions
to the call for papers and subsequent presentations. Only one of the presenters focused on young people and their entrance to working
life. For the individual, problems connected to age and aging are relevant for both young and old alike. How to define 'old' is far from clear
– which was one of the continuing points of discussion at the workshop. Unemployment is a problem many older individuals face (which
was the starting point for some papers) – but also addressed was the importance of keeping experienced staff in the organization. In
some occupations this is already an urgent problem, which was announced in two papers, with empirical examples from two countries on
nurses. The concept of age and lack of competence in age management was prevalent in the discussions – nicely illustrated through a
paper on how age is presented in business magazines.
Entrepreneurship as a strategy to solve different age-related problems – unemployment, prolongation of working life, incomes, etc. – was
presented and discussed in some papers. The connection between the labour market and entrepreneurship and self-employment is a
factor that is not always acknowledged in research or in politics. The last perspectives were highlighted through summarizing comments
from The Centre for Senior Policy in Norway.
