Removing and Replacing the Hardware
Components in Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV
This chapter provides information about field upgrades for both software and hardware components and
describes how to remove and replace the field-replaceable units (FRUs) in the Cisco uBR Advanced RF
Switch (Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV).
• Field Upgrades, page 1
• How to Remove and Install the FRUs, page 2
Field Upgrades
The Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV supports field upgrades for both the operating software image and FRUs. It
handles system management of field upgrades, like hot swapping cards and micro-controller images. The
Cisco uBR10012 router initiates image download and facilitates access to the Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV.
Software Upgrades
The Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV supports online software image upgrades. The operating state (failover,
pass-through) is not changed during the download or upgrade process. The interface between the controller
card and the Cisco uBR10012 router via the RS-232 interface is functional during the image upgrade process.
Hardware Upgrades
All FRUs in the system are field-upgradable. The Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV is responsible for managing all
image updates to the individual system cards. All cards support hot-swapping.
The following FRUs are present in the Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV:
• Upstream switch cards
• Upstream protect cards
• Upstream interconnect cards
• Downstream switch cards

How to Remove and Install the FRUs
• Downstream protect cards
• Downstream interconnect cards
• Power supply
• Controller card
Note
See the "Preparing for the Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV Installation" section for information on safety and
electrostatic discharge damage (ESD). Also see the Regulatory Compliance and Safety Information for
the Cisco Next Generation RF Switch for a list of translated warnings.
How to Remove and Install the FRUs
This section describes the removal and installation of the FRUs.
Removing the Switch and Interconnect Cards
Caution
Ensure that you are grounded using an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap.
Before You Begin
Have the following tools handy while performing this task:
• #2 Phillips screw driver
• Slotted screw driver
• Card extraction/insertion tool
Procedure
Step 1
Remove the UCH2. See Figure 1: Removing the UCH2, on page 3.
1 Loosen the lead screw (counter-clockwise) on the UCH2 until it is completely disengaged from the
faceplate.
2 Pull the UCH2 straight away from the faceplate using the lead screw.

Step 2
Remove the switch card.
1 Use the card extraction/insertion tool as shown in Figure 2: Using the Card Extraction/Insertion Tool, on
page 4.
2 Using a #2 phillips or a slotted screwdriver, loosen the top and bottom captive screws on the card.

3 Grasp the upper handle on the card and slide the card out of the slot (Figure 3: Removing the Switch Card
from the Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV Chassis, on page 4). Place it on an antistatic surface with the component
side facing up.

Caution
Tip
Handle the card from the faceplate or the card edges only. Be careful while sliding the switch card
out so as not to damage the relays on the card.
In an upstream-only Cisco UBR-RFSW-ADV, always install a blank cover in an empty slot to ensure
proper cooling and airflow.
Installing the Switch and Interconnect Cards
Caution
Use both hands when handling the card. Do not drop the card. Handle the card from the faceplate or the
card edges only.
Caution
Ensure that you are grounded using an ESD-preventive wrist or ankle strap.
