Part I: Laboratory Safety
This section of the lab will cover proper safety practices that you should observe in this course as well as
ones you take in the future.
You will watch the video Workshop Safety Series: Chemistry Laboratory during the first lab meeting. As
you watch, answer the following questions. Most questions highlight important safety rules (though
everything in this video is important, right?), but some are simply here to confirm that you actually watched
the video. Hopefully, you’re smart enough to know which is which.
Once graded and returned, you should keep this handout for future reference.

SAFETY AGREEMENT FOR GENERAL AND ORGANIC CHEMISTRY LABS
While in the laboratory, I understand that I should abide by the following rules
1.
Wear appropriate eye protection at all times.
2.
Do not wear shorts or short skirts.
3.
Wear socks with shoes (no sandals or open-toe shoes).
4.
Tie back long hair. If wearing a ball cap, wear it with the lid facing back.
5.
Do not attempt any unauthorized experiments.
6.
Know where the safety equipment is and how to use it.
7.
Never work in a laboratory without an instructor present.
8.
Make sure equipment is in good condition (check with instructor if uncertain).
9.
Keep the laboratory, including equipment drawer and its contents, clean.
10. Dispose of waste and excess materials according to instructions.
11. Handle all chemicals with caution and avoid touching hot objects.
12. Thoroughly wash hands at the end of each laboratory period.
13. Behave appropriately and avoid horseplay or other types of distracting behavior.
14. No phone calls or messaging in the laboratory.
15. Report all accidents and injuries, no matter how minor, to the lab instructor immediately.
I have watched the safety video and listened to my instructor’s explanations of safety
rules and techniques. I fully understand all safety precautions summarized above. I
recognize that is my responsibility to observe these precautions, for this course as well as
any future courses I take at Durham Tech.
