A publication of the Baltimore Food & Faith Project supported by the Johns Hopkins Center for a Livable Future The Good Food Digest Calendar Fall 2013 Garden Celebration Dinner On Oct.10 BFFP held its fourth annual Faith Garden Celebration Dinner. Past and present garden grant recipients gathered to share a sustainable meal made from mostly regional foods; share stories of challenges, successes, and impacts; and view pictures from this year’s garden activities. The event was graciously hosted by Epiphany Episcopal Church in Timonium and gathered represen- tatives from nine gardens. Some of the successes shared by attendees included supplying fresh, local, organically grown meals to food pantries and community meals, teaching children within schools and congregations the fundamentals of farming, and forming partnerships with other organizations to discover and learn the potential and importance of sustainable farming. The culinary demonstration, led by Kathy McNeely, mainly utilized locally grown apples supplied by the Baltimore Orchard Project. Winter Gardening Workshop McNeely discussed the health benefits of apples, including their vitamin-rich skins, and recommended seeking out pesticide-free apples. Wellness Bible Study: The Food and Faith Connection By Surina Ann Jordan At Huber Memorial Church in Baltimore City, we have been making the faith and food connection, not only with a community garden, but by offering a Bible study on wellness. Years ago Huber Memorial, under the leadership of Pastor P.M. Smith, adopted as its mission “rescue the https://www.eventbrite.com/ event/7964549181 9am – 1pm For our last volunteer tree planting event, we will likely plant trees at Wm Paca Elementary School and we will do some tree maintenance to those trees we’ve planted. Meet at the Prince of Peace Baptist Church, 600 N. Linwood Ave. 21205 at 9:00 a.m. Rain date is the Sunday following the Saturday date children, redeem the family, and recreate community.” Each week, Smith challenges members to “live like it.” The church operates a preschool and elementary school; a feeding ministry, athletic ministry; and members can select the wellness class from one of approximately 50 life-enhancing Bible study classes. It was a perfect fit for Huber. The eight-week wellness class curriculum is based on my upcoming book entitled The Seven Disciplines of Wellness. I am a church member, a researcher, and a holistic nutritionist. These disciplines are fully supported by the Bible and are the core teaching. For example, disciplines one and two emphasize faith in Jesus Christ, prayer and the great commandment as essentials for wellness. These two disciplines empower and motivate participants to make sustainable change. It presents wellness as a lifestyle that is possible based on the spiritual constitution of a person. To live being accountable to God is witnessed through stewardship of the body and the world He has provided us. Discipline Seven is Eat and Drink Pure. The course addresses the original diet and wise counsel found in scripture about food. Other disciplines include fitness, household management, using common sense to make healthy deci- sions, and purposeful living. Within the eight-week period, four optional events are held in order to give the practical application of key elements of the disciplines. 1. A group meal at a plant-based restaurant. Sample plant-based proteins and fresh vegetables. 2. An early-morning walk and tailgate at Lake Montebello. Following a few laps around the lake, snacks include Ezekiel raisin bread squares and nondairy cream cheese, organic apples, nutty energy bars, packs of raw almonds or raisins, water and hot apple cider. 3. A tour of a food store or farmers’ market. Emphasizes reading labels, meal planning and conscious shopping. 4. An end-of-class healthy meal and food demonstration. In the three years the course has been taught at Huber, more than 10 percent of the congregation has completed it. Others have also benefited from one-day workshops. The book will be released at the end of November. In early 2014, a workbook and train-the-trainer program will be available. For more information, contact me at [email protected] or 443-690-7315. Food For Thought: “The existence of urban farming comes as a surprise to most Westerners, because the phenomenon has until recently been underreported… Yet urban agriculture and animal husbandry are, historically speaking, the norm; they probably began with the very first cities… The historical peculiarity to be explained, then, is not the recent rise of urban agriculture but rather the absence of farming from industrialized cities throughout the twentieth century.” - From Ellen Davis from her book Scripture, Culture, and Agriculture: An Agrarian Reading of the Bible.
