TEXT: Calculus: Concepts and Contexts, Fourth Edition, James Stewart
ISBN: 0-495-55742-0
Go to www.cengagebrain.com for less expensive e-book options (such as downloading one
chapter at a time). There is a link on my website for this.
PREREQUISITES: Math 142 (Trigonometry, minimum grade 2.2) and Math 141 (Precalculus). In addition to this course, you must register for CSC102Q to learn how to use
Mathematica, which you will use in Math 151, 152, and 163
REQUIRED MATERIALS: notebook, pencil, graphing calculator.
GRAPHING CALCULATORS:
TI-83 recommended. Symbolic calculators, such as the TI-89 or Casio “Natural Display”
are not allowed. You may rent a TI-83 for $10 per quarter. Pay at the cashier’s office,
then bring me the receipt and I will give you a calculator. If you do not know how to
operate a TI-83, you can download a tutorial from the course website.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this course, students will:
1. Review polynomial, logarithmic, trigonometric, and exponential functions.
2. Evaluate limits
3. Find derivatives of functions
4. Apply derivatives to solve related rate and optimization problems.
5. Use Mathematica (mathematics software) to perform calculus tasks.
We will cover chapters 1-4 of the textbook.
WEEKLY HOMEWORK: Plan on spending a minimum of 10 hours per week on
homework. Assignments will be the exercises at the end of each section in the book, as
well as hand-outs and other activities. The purpose of this homework is for practice and
for you to make sure you know how to do the problems. The answers are in the back of
the book. Please check to be sure your answers are correct. Homework should be neat, in
pencil, and organized. Also, show your work and label your graphs. Homework is due
each Tuesday, and is worth 25 points each week
LATE HOMEWORK: Homework is due at the beginning of class. Otherwise, it is late.
Late homework penalties are:
Same day, turned in after class has started…. -25%
Up to one week late… -50%
More than one week late… not accepted
LATE HOMEWORK EXCEPTION: Each student is allowed to turn in one homework
assignment up to one week late for full credit. This will account for emergencies, illness,
etc.
PROJECT: Near the end of the quarter, you will complete a project, which will be a
culmination of what you learned in this course. You will use Mathematica to complete
this project. This is worth 50 points.
QUIZZES and TESTS: There will be a basic skills quiz, worth 25 points, during the
first week of the quarter to make sure you can do the algebra and trigonometry required
for this course. There will be a few quizzes (usually half-way through a chapter), worth
50 points each. There will also be a test, worth 100 points, at the end of chapter 2 and at
the end of chapter 3. Also, there will be a cumulative final exam, (this will also cover
chapters 2-4), worth 200 points. The dates of each quiz and test will be announced in
advance.
MAKE-UP TESTS or QUIZ: If you miss a quiz or test due to illness or emergency, I
will use the percentage on your final exam score in place of the test or quiz that you
missed. If you do not miss any tests or quizzes, then I will replace your lowest quiz or test
score with your final exam score (if your final exam score is higher). There is no make-up
for the final exam. If you miss the final exam, you get zero points for it. Do not miss the
final no matter what!
ATTENDANCE: Attendance is mandatory. You must come to class everyday, on time,
and stay until the end of class.
