Spanish 101 is the first half of a yearlong course designated to develop the basic proficiency in
oral and written Spanish. Activities, tasks, and test have been designed to facilitate
development in communication: the ability to comprehend native speakers of Spanish, to speak
Spanish with them, to understand Spanish language texts, and to communicate your own ideas
in Spanish.
SPAN 201-Second Year of Spanish, Sem ester I
M W F– 11:00am -12:00pm
This course develops the fundamentals set forth in introductory Spanish courses, with emphases
on communicative approaches to language usage. To that end, spoken and written
communication will play central roles in the activities we complete. Significant elements of Latin
America culture will also be addressed, as means of better approaching and understanding the
Spanish-speaking world.
SPAN 345-Advanced Spanish Conversation,
M W F–2:00pm -3:00pm
During this class students will learn of the major forces that have shaped Spain from the time of
the Roman occupation to the present day. Latin American history will be covered from the
great pre-Colombian civilizations to the present day. The geographical background for each
area will be provided, although given the broad scope of the course, it will necessarily be brief.
Spanish 345 will be taught in Spanish (with English used only for occasional clarification).
