In December, 2002, vandals defaced and destroyed several pictographs within the
Badlands Wilderness Study Area. This crime resulted in the loss of irreplaceable
archeological resources and important educational benefits for future generations.
The Bureau of Land Management is presently taking actions to restore and protect
the site. You can help by practicing the following principles:
• Enjoy these ancient images by viewing, sketching or photographing them.
Chalking, tracing or otherwise touching these drawings can damage them
forever.
• If you find stone flakes or other artifacts on the ground, please leave them
where they are – it’s the law.
• Please be sure to Leave No Trace of your visit. Take only photos and leave only
footprints.
• Remember, it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure the protection of these
special places.
