Attached you will find Washington Office Information Bulletin No. 2003-048, dated
January 17, 2003, which requests nominations for the above subject awards. These awards recognize Safety and Occupational
Health Program contributions that benefit the Department of the Interior in the categories of Merit and Professional Service.
Descriptions of the award categories are: The Award of Merit and The Professional Service Award.
The award criteria and nomination procedures are explained in the attachment. To receive maximum consideration,
nominations should address all appropriate factors outlined in the criteria. Please ensure that your employees receive a copy
of this correspondence. We encourage submissions of nominations for these awards.
Nominations, including supporting documentation, should be submitted to Alina Malray, Branch of Human Resources, OR­
953, no later than February 10, 2003.
Districts with Unions are reminded to notify their unions of this IB and satisfy any bargaining obligations before
implementation. Your servicing Human Resources Office or Labor Relations Specialist can provide you assistance in this
matter.

Nominations are being requested for the following prestigious Departmental Safety Awards that recognize Safety and
Occupational Health Program contributions that benefit the Department of the Interior:
a. The Award of Merit: Given to an individual, group, bureau, office, or organizational unit which has
performed an outstanding service for or made a contribution of unusual value to the Department’s Safety
and Occupational Health Program.
b. The Professional Service Award: Given to a safety and health professional who has contributed quality
service to his/her bureau, office, or the Department of the Interior during their career.
Following are some of the subject areas for award recognition: reducing accidents and injuries; fostering a safety and
health culture; identification and abatement of unsafe conditions; providing safety and health resources; encouraging
safety program accountability; and promoting safety and health awareness. Other safety and occupational health
improvement initiatives will also be considered, based on professional judgment of the Bureau Safety Manager and the
Interior Safety and Occupational Health Council.

NOMINATION FORM
The Safety Award of Merit recognizes an individual, group, bureau, office, or organizational unit which
has performed an outstanding service for, or made a contribution of unusual value to the Department's
Safety and Occupational Health Program.
The nominee must have demonstrated exemplary perfo~ce and produced significant results that are
aligned with one or more of the goals of the Department of the Interior Strategic Safety and
Occupational Health Plan which are summarized below (the full text of the Plan is available on
SafetyNet, http://SafetyNet.smis.doi.gov/StrPlan2000.htm):
Establish a safe and healthful environment within the Department of the Interior by building a
safety and health culture which will move the Department toward the goal of zero loss to human
and material resources.
