Routes are not maintained and may be difficult to locate. Topography is flat to gently rolling but becomes progressively steeper close to the main drainages including the Deschutes River. Vegetation is diverse but impacts from human agricultural uses, such as livestock grazing and dryland farming, are prevalent and much of the area is dominated by undesirable annual vegetation such as medusahead rye and cheat grass. The habitat diversity supports an equally diverse wildlife population. Rocky Mountain elk, mule deer, pronghorn antelope, upland and song birds, raptors, and small mammals are common. The size, accessibility, and location in relation to larger metropolitan areas of the state are attractants for recreational users. Much of the use to date has been directed toward hunting, but use by hikers, mountain bikers, and horse riders has been increasing. Motorized vehicle traffic is currently restricted to administrative use only. 121.15° W Chic k e Criterion Tract 645000E Fossil 10 2500 26 er 2806 ft 00 Johnson Flat Prineville 2957 ft 1 3116 ft Buckskin Mary 2 3 Kilometers 45.05° N ek C re Criterion South Trailhead Ma Bench 121.15° W 0 Reservation 00 25 300 2500 121.10° W 650000E 2000 0 3000 645000E 300 2500 t a i ns 2500 00 0 M o un 30 00 250 Dixon Indian Mutt on 2000 ai l an yo 3143 ft k 35 4985000N gl Ea r ee C e n Tr n 3024 ft u pi C Rainbow Bend Springs No warranty is made by the Bureau of Land Management as to the accuracy, reliability, or completeness of these data for individual or aggregate use with other data.
