9/11/2015 PRINEVILLE DISTRICT WSA FIRE MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES
Call a resource advisor everytime there is a fire jn or near a WSA
Specific WSA guidance:
Steelhead Falls- all fires will be suppressed using Perimeter control or full control due to
the proximity of private land with structures.
Aldrich- vehicle travel will be permitted off designated routes in the medusahead flat
areas in Murderer's Creek. This will only be permitted when the fire activity is such that it
would make the difference in containing the fire at a small size vs. the fire becoming large
and threatening private, ODF, and USFS land.
The full range of appropriate response will be considered for managing fires in the
Prineville BLM WSA's(except for Steelhead Falls)
The following guidelines apply to managing fire in all WSA's, ACEC's, RNA's, and WSR's.
These are collectively known as SMA's (Special Management Areas). Separate guidance is
provided for managing fires in designated Wilderness Areas
1. All suppression vehicles will carry maps of designated SMA boundaries and Minimum
Impact Suppression Tactics (M.I.S.T.) guidelines.
2. Vehicles will be restricted to utilizing designated routes and ways; Cross-country travel
is prohibited except if specifically authorized by BLM District Manager or to protect
from imminent harm to life or property.
3. All fires will be suppressed or monitored.
4. Equipment use for fire line construction will be restricted.
5. The guiding principle for fire management activities will be to preserve the area's
natural condition, consistent with principles of safe fire management.
6. Except for spot maintenance to remove obstructions, ways, reservoirs and trails will not
be improved.
7. Construction ofhelispots may be done when absolutely necessary, but will be limited to
clearing only enough to allow safe aircraft operations and reclamation is done.
8. Hand tools are preferred.
9. Retardant approved by U.S. Forest Service may be utilized(use near waterways requires
resource advisor approval).
10. Fire fighting equipment other than earth moving equipment may be utilized providing
that designated ways are utilized and crossing of streams, seeps and bogs is avoided.
11. Locate fire camps outside WSAs.
12. A resource/wilderness advisor will be assigned to every fire.
