Welcome to COFMS (Central Oregon Fire Management Service)! We are happy to have you and
wish to provide you a comfortable and enjoyable experience during your stay in Central Oregon.
The intent of this document is to adequately provide information needed for safe and efficient fire
assignment, as well as provide you with helpful information about the local area.
COFMS is an interagency fire organization comprised of the Prineville District of the BLM and the
Deschutes and Ochoco National Forests. The Crooked River National Grassland is also included
and is managed as part of the Ochoco National Forests.

Area Description:
Public lands in Central Oregon are widely scattered. The Prineville BLM district boundary encloses
approximately 12.7 million acres between the Columbia River to the north, south of the town of
Crescent in Klamath County to the south, the Cascade crest on the west, and near the town of John

Day at the eastern boundary. Within that broad area, the two forests and BLM holdings total
nearly 4 million acres. Several other federal land management partners have extensive holdings as
well within that 12.7 million acres, including portions of the Umatilla and Malheur National
Forests, and the Warm Springs Reservation, and the National Park Service and Bureau of
Reclamation manage smaller areas.
