GSU HAS TRANSFORMED
THE TRANSFER EXPERIENCE
Our transfer students come from many directions and
many backgrounds.
Some move directly from community college with
an associate degree to their junior year at GSU.
Others transfer from colleges and universities across
the region to complete their bachelor’s degrees. Still
others return to college after working or military service,
determined to complete a degree program begun
years ago. All come to GSU to take advantage of
our academic excellence, specialized programs, and
affordable tuition.
Two paths to a bachelor’s degree from GSU
•
You can apply to GSU when you have at least 25
college credit hours or an associate degree from an
accredited institution. Choose the degree program
that meets your goals.*
•
Join the Dual Degree Program as a full-time
community college student and take advantage
of locked-in GSU tuition rates, scholarship
opportunities, and GSU academic advising.
*Students with fewer than 25 credit hours are welcome to inquire about transferring to GSU as a freshman.

TRANSFER THURSDAYS:
INSTANT ADMISSION DAYS
It’s time to complete your bachelor’s degree. If you have
already completed at least 25 college credit hours or earned
an associate degree, or are close to it, Transfer Thursdays are
perfect for you!
On Transfer Thursdays, you can visit GSU, submit your
completed application and official transcript(s)*, and get
your admission decision all on the same day. You can also tour
our campus, learn how to finance your education, speak with
an admission counselor, and learn about student resources.
You are ready for Transfer Thursdays if:
•
You have earned your associate degree or completed at
least 25 credit hours of college coursework, by the time
you enroll at GSU.
•
You have 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA.**
•
You can obtain official transcripts from each of your
previously attended institution(s).
Application deadlines apply to some undergraduate
programs. Visit www.govst/degree for admission and deadline
information. Media Studies, Nursing, and Social Work
programs are not eligible for instant admission.

in the sealed envelope in which it was sent from your previously attended college or

COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES
Your view of the world will be transformed by the
College of Arts & Sciences’ degree programs. When
you choose one of our 22 majors, you dig deep into
big ideas that will shape your career and expand
your horizons. We bring globalization to virtually
any major.
“I teach writing because it has
changed my life. Somewhere along
the way I realized that my words could
make a difference. I was painfully shy
and withdrawn as a child and usually
found it impossible to talk to teachers
or kids at school. But I could speak
when I wrote. Writing opened up for
me a way to participate in my world, to shape it, to change
it, even to learn to accept it. I want my students to know
that they can make a difference. Writing can help them to
understand, question, argue, and shape their world.”

COLLEGE OF EDUCATION
If your passion is for education or psychology, your
career starts in the GSU College of Education. This
is where you prepare for a profession and a life in
service to others. This also is where you find courses
and degree programs that have been transformed
from the ordinary. The courses you take and your

A GLOBAL SCOPE
COLLEGE OF BUSINESS
Chicagoland has a well-earned reputation for transforming
business and management strategies and techniques —
here and around the world. The GSU College of Business’s
accreditation from the Association to Advance Collegiate
Schools of Business, AACSB, reinforces our reputation
as a business school that prepares students to take a
leadership role in businesses which compete in the global
marketplace.
No matter the major you choose, you’ll see how GSU
is transforming business education. You’ll learn from
talented and knowledgeable professors who guide you
through a multifaceted approach to the world of business.
The College of Business was a member of the Globalizing
Business Schools consortium in 2010 – 14. In partnership
with The Indiana University Center for International Business
Education and Research, GSU faculty internationalized its
curriculum. Starting in 2014, COB became IU CIBER’s
partner in their new grant, and will offer one study abroad
trip each year for the 2014 – 18 period. In the summer of
2015, GSU students traveled to Brazil, and in the summer
of 2016, another group visited South Africa.
Participation in these study trips helps
students and faculty broaden their horizons
and gain appreciation of how global forces are
influencings today’s businesses.
“I’ve worked in accounting firms and law firms; I’ve
run small businesses and worked in huge ones. I’ve
worked for nonprofits and government agencies, but
nothing, nothing, inspires me like teaching in front
of a classroom full of students — and the students
here at Governors State have an incredible hunger
for knowledge, and that only drives me to be the best
professor that I can be, in teaching, in research, and
in service to the community.”

Assistant Professor, Accounting Finance Management Information Systems

“Two factors that initially attracted
me to Governors State University
were the affordability of the
program and the flexibility of
course scheduling. However, I
quickly came to recognize and
appreciate the accessibility of
the instructors: it’s incredibly
valuable and essential to student
success.”

“I am passionate about teaching my students how to become great leaders — not
only in the healthcare field, but also in
their communities. After all, what good is
knowledge if you aren’t able to share it with
others to make someone else’s life better?
In the classroom, it’s important that my
teaching style matches the learning styles
of my students in order help them be more successful. Keeping in
mind that not everyone learns in the same way, I have had to come
up with some really innovative ways to teach specific leadership
topics. It’s all worth the effort when I notice the sparkle in a
student’s eye when they finally ‘get it.’ For me, teaching is about
inspiring your students to reach beyond themselves, and being
open to joining them on their journey!”
“When my employer presented me
with the opportunity to return to
school for my bachelor’s degree, my
first and only choice was Governors
State. Here I have met many new
friends who are taking the journey
with me, and those friendships will
continue long after graduation. Every
single professor has been absolutely wonderful to learn from
and very understanding of my pressing work schedule. GSU
offers the flexibility in class schedules that I need. I will be
continuing my education into the Master’s Program here. GSU
will definitely be providing me the education I need to succeed
in my healthcare career.”

FOUR STEPS TO FINANCIAL AID
Step 1: Apply for admission to Governors State
University, if you are not already an admitted student.
No financial aid can be processed until you are an
admitted student and your Social Security Number
(SSN) is on file in the Office of Admission.
Note: Admitted students who plan to apply for GSU
Foundation Scholarships should complete their
FAFSAs on or before February 1. For more information
about 2017 GSU Scholarships, visit: www.govst.edu/
scholarships.
Step 2: Apply for an FSA ID with the U.S. Department
of Education: https://fsaid.ed.gov. Students and
parents cannot apply for financial aid until they each
have their own FSA IDs. If you or your parents have an
FSA ID from a previous year, please use them. If you
have forgotten your FSA ID, the U.S. Department of
Education will help you retrieve it.
Step 4: Upon completion of your FAFSA, GSU’s
Office of Financial Aid will communicate with you via
your GSU email address with further instruction on
completing the financial aid process.
You must retain this FSA ID, as it is required to
complete the FAFSA each year and is required in order
to access to Student Loan Entrance Counseling and
Master Promissory Notes for Federal Student Loans.
Step 3: As soon as possible on or after October 1,
complete the 2017 – 18 Free Application for Federal
Student Aid (FAFSA): www.fafsa.gov. The FAFSA is
used to determine eligibility for federal and state
financial aid.
20
Make sure you work with the Office of Financial Aid to
complete the financial aid process before the first day
of class. This will enable you to meet the university
deadlines for tuition and fee payment.
If you plan to use Federal Student Loans, make sure
you have a plan for repaying them after graduation.
For more information about Federal Student Loans, visit:
https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/understand.
2016 – 17 ACADEMIC YEAR
(FALL AND SPRING TERMS)
A college education is one of the most valuable investments you can make in your future. Over a lifetime, a college
graduate will earn, on average, $830,000 more than a high school graduate* and 70 percent of today’s job openings
paying more than $15 an hour require a college degree. Add all of that to GSU’s affordable tuition and fees with our
focus on academic excellence, and the value of your investment becomes clear.
We know that making the investment in your future often requires financial aid. In fact, more than 82 percent of GSU
freshmen rely on some form of financial aid.

more about cultures around the world, take advantage of opportunities to
promote global awareness, and get involved.

MY GSU EXPERIENCE
“Faculty-inResidence
provides an
opportunity
for students to
connect with
faculty beyond
classroom, to
create unique
social interactions, and to simply
develop community in an academic
setting. Not to mention I enjoyed the
luxury of walking to work while living in
the country.”
“As a transfer
student from
a community
college, I built
very close
and personal
relationships
with some of
my freshmen
neighbors at Prairie Place. I really
enjoyed working hand in hand with
the resident assistants to get students
involved and develop school spirit. I
love being a Jaguar.”

“Being an RA at
Prairie Place
gave me an
opportunity
to experience
firsthand all
the ways GSU
transforms
students’ lives.
Every day I got to observe and help
shape the culture being developed in
our resident community. I am glad I
was able to be a part of it.”

ACCREDITATIONS
Academic excellence at Governors State University demands that we meet the
most rigorous standards. The University is accredited by The Higher Learning
Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and
our College of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate
Schools of Business.
But we go further than that. Every one of our programs either has earned or is seeking appropriate professional
accreditation, wherever that kind of accreditation exists and is recognized by the profession. Many cross lines
between colleges. Programs that do not have a recognized accrediting body are put through an intensive
external review by expert evaluators. Our students deserve nothing less than the highest academic standards.
