**SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT: A CASE STUDY OF ABD AR-RAHMAN BN A’WF‘S ENTREPRENEURSHIP Dr. Nur Abdi Gudle Department of Usuluddin Faculty of Islamic Studies and Civilization (FPPI) Selangor International Islamic University College (KUIS) Bandar Sri Putra 43650 Bangi Selangor Darul Ehsan, [email protected] Abstract This paper aims to present the personality and the experience of the companion (Sahabi) and great entrepreneur: Abdi Ar-Rahman Bn ‘Awf for his creation and management of small business in Madenah. It will highlight his techniques and how he could succeed after Hijrah to Madinah, where he became the most successful businessman among the Muhajireen. He said about his miracle talents in the business: “indeed you see me; I hope if I lift up a stone, I will find silver and gold under it!” What made his business blessed and successful? Moreover, this study also will try to exam the scopes of business and the wealth in Islamic perspectives. As well as, this paper studies the virtues of selfesteem and its importance for the personal successes and community development. 1 Introduction Profile of Abdi Ar-Rahman bn ‘Awf: He is Abu Muhammad Abd Ar-Rahman Bn ‘Awf Al-Zuhri Al-Quraishi, he was born after 10 years of (feel) elephant, before Hijrah 44 years, and died 32H / 570-652D. He was a great companion (my Allah be pleased with him), embraced Islam very early in first hours of the mission. He had done so even before the Messenger of Allah (PBUH) entered Daar Al-Arqam and took it as a seat to meet his faithful Companion. His name was: Abdu Al-Ca’aba, then Rasululah named him: Abdu Ar-Rahman. He was one of the eight who were the first to embrace Islam, when Abu Bakar preached Islam to him together with ‘Uthmaan Bn Affan, Azzubair Bn Al-Awaam, Talhah Bn Ubaid Allah, and Sa’d Bn Abi Waqqaas, they did not grudge or doubt the matter. On the contrary, they hastened with As-Siddiiq to the Messenger of Allah, acknowledging him as Allah’s Messenger and carrying his standard1. From the time he embraced Islam till he died at 75, he was a splendid model of a great believer, which made the prophet (PBUH) count him among the top ten to whom he gave glad tidings of inheriting Paradise. This also made ‘Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) count him among the six advisers whom he assigned for succession after himself. He said, “The messenger of Allah (PBUH) died while pleased with them”. After ‘Abd Ar-Rahman embraced Islam, he faced his own portion of the persecution and challenges of the Quraish. When the Prophet (PBUH) ordered his companion to immigrate to Abyssinia, Abd ‘Awof emigrated with them, but he returned to Makkah. Then he immigrated to Abyssinia in the second immigrations, and from there to AlMadiinah, where he witnessed Badar, Uhud, and all the battles2. ﻋﺜﻤﺎﻥ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻔﺎﻥ ﻭﺯﺑﲑ ﺑﻦ ﻋﻮﺍﻡ ﻭﻃﻠﺤﺔ ﺑﻦ ﻋﺒﻴﺪ ﺍﷲ ﻭﺳﻌﺪ ﺑﻦ ﻭﻗﺎﺹ:ﺍﻷﻭﺍﺋﻞ ﰲ ﺍﺳﺘﺠﺎﺑﺔ ﺍﻟﺪﻋﻮﺓ ﻣﺜﻞ ﻭﺷﻬﺪ ﺑﺪﺭﺍ، ﻫﺎﺟﺮ ﺍﳍﺠﺮﺗﲔ. )ﻋﺒﺪ ﺍﻟﻜﻌﺒﺔ( ﻓﺴﻤﺎﻩ ﺍﻟﺮﺳﻮﻝ ﺻﻠﻰ ﺍﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ ﻋﺒﺪ ﺍﻟﺮﲪﻦ:ﻭﻛﺎﻥ ﺍﲰﻪ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻣﻮﺳﺮﺍ. ﻭﺃﺣﺪ ﺍﻟﺴﺘﺔ ﺃﺻﺤﺎﺏ ﺍﻟﺸﻮﺭﻯ ﺑﻌﺪ ﻋﻤﺮ، ﻭﻫﻮ ﺃﺣﺪ ﺍﻟﻌﺸﺮﺓ ﺍﳌﺒﺸﺮﻳﻦ ﺑﺎﳉﻨﺔ،ﻭﺳﺎﺋﺮ ﺍﳌﺸﺎﻫﺪ ﺗﻮﰲ. ﻛﻤﺎ ﺃﻧﻪ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻛﺮﳝﺎ ﺟﻮﺍﺩﺍ ﺷﺠﺎﻋﺎ، ﻭﳛﺘﺮﻑ ﺍﻟﺘﺠﺎﺭﺓ ﻭﻛﺎﻥ ﻋﺎﻣﺔ ﻣﺎﻟﻪ ﻣﻦ ﺍﻟﺘﺠﺎﺭﺓ،ﻭﻛﺜﲑ ﺍﳌﺎﻝ .٣ ﺣﺪﻳﺜﺎ٦٥ ﻭﻟﻪ ﰲ ﺍﻟﺼﺤﻴﺤﲔ،ﺑﺎﳌﺪﻳﻨﺔ ﺍﳌﻨﻮﺭﺓ ﺭﺿﻲ ﺍﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ ﻭﺃﺭﺿﺎﻩ 1 - see: Khaalid, Muhammad Khaalid: Men around the Messenger, (Translated by: Sheikh Muhammad Mustafa) published by: Dar Al-Manarah, El-Mansoura Egypt, p: 369. 2 - Ibid: P 369-370. نQqOM . 2 Divination of Entrepreneur and A’bdi Al-Rahman Bn ‘Awf’s experience According to the modern writers in the filed of small business managements, an “Entrepreneur is a person who creates a new business in the face of risk and uncertainty for the purpose of achieving profit and growth by identifying opportunities and assembling the necessary to capitalize on them. Entrepreneurs usually start with nothing more then an idea, often a simple one, and then assemble the resources necessary to transform that idea into a sustainable business”4. Thus, why some expert says: “The entrepreneur’s job is to put everything together, wearing 10 different hats, juggling 20 different balls, relying on (his or her) own knowledge and instincts and creativity to get … to positive cash flow”5. How Abdi Al-Rahman bn ‘Awf created his business in Al-Madiinah? Imam Al-Bukhari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated, that, at the time of the early Hijrah (immigrations) to Al-Madinah, The noble Messenger (PBUH) associated his companion and he made every two of his companion as brothers, a Muhaajir (Emigrant) from Makkah with an Ansaar (Helper) from Al-Madiinah. This association took place in an astounding way. Each Ansar in Al-Madiinah shared with his brother Muhaajir everything that he owned, even his bed. If he was married to two women, he would divorce one for his brother to marry! The noble example for that is the story of Abdi Al-Rahman bn ‘Awf, when the noble Messenger (PBUH) associated him, made Abdi Al-Rahman as a brother with Sa’d Ibn Ar-Rabii’a. Then Sa’d said to Abdi Al-Rahman: “O brother, I am the richest in AlMadiinah, take half of my fortune, and I have two wives, choose the one you like better and I will divorce her for you to marry”. But Abdi Al-Rahaman bn ‘Awf said: “Allah blesses your family and your money, I do not need for that! Is there any market? Show me the way to the market”6. He went to the market and started his business of milk and cheese, bought, sold, and gained profit quickly, like wais he marred quickly by his own money, and noble Messenger asked him to do the wedding ceremony and gifts to his newly wife, all of this was successful small business managements as well as entrepreneurial approach and skills of Abdi Ar-Rahman bn ‘Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) with the blessed (Baraka) of Allah. That is how he led his life in Al-Madiinah, whether during the Messenger’s lifetime (PBUH) or after his death, doing his duty towards religion or the world’s work and succeeding in his trade so much, therefore he said: “indeed you see me; I hope if I lift up a stone, I will find silver and gold under it!”7 4 - Norman M.Scarborough, Thomas W.Zimmerer: Effective Small Business Management Entrepreneurial Approach, 2000, 1996 by Prentice-Hall, Inc. Firstly: Taqwa and Ikhlas or honesty and sincerity made him more blessed man; A’bdi Ar-Rahman’s trade was blessed by Allah, because he was pursing the halaal, and strictly moving away from haraam and corruptions, or even doubtful transactions. He did not take advantage when Sa’d said to Abdi Al-Rahman: “O brother, I am the richest in AlMadiinah, take half of my fortune, and I have two wives, choose the one you like better and I will divorce her for you to marry”. But Abdi Al-Rahaman bn ‘Awf refused this offer because he was an honest man, which did not want to take advantage on the kindly personality of his brother Sa’d, therefore he said: “I did not need for that, Allah blesses your family and your money. Show me the way to the market” he was honest man and sincere to his brother, then Allah makes his transactions fully of Baraka. He was hard working, with the highly self-esteems character and he was very confidence by his ability in the business, that why he said: (ﺍﻟﺴﻮﻕ ﺩﻟﻮﱐ ﻋﻠﻰshow me the market), not dependant on the others. Therefore, he went to the market strictly and he returned to home at evening with profits from the transactions he made in the day. These incidents alone represent the complete image of the highly self-esteems character of Abdi Ar-Rahman bn ‘Awf, which assuredly determining with lain of Prophet’s guidance as he sings: “ﻧﺴﺒﻪ ﻭﻣﻦ ﺑﻄﺄ ﺑﻪ ﻋﻤﻠﻪ ﱂ ﻳﺴﺮﻉ ﺑﻪand that whose deeds decelerate him (they are not so good), his parentage will not accelerate him”. Obviously, this is something teaching us the virtual of self-esteems, survivals approaches, rather then depend on the parent, parentage and ethnics, or the governments and charity organizations. Thirdly: He was cherty businessman, knows social responsibility on hem. In fact, what made his business even more blessed and successful was that it was not for ‘Abd ArRahman alone. Allah had a bigger share in it, by which he used to strengthen the ties of his family and brothers and prepare the armies of Islam. If commerce and fortune are usually evaluated on the basis of stocks on hand and profits, ‘Abd Ar-Rahman ibn ‘Awf’s fortune was evaluated on the basis of what was expended from it in the cause of Allah, the Lord of All the world14. He was very much a successful merchant and rich man; on the other hand, he was the wise believer who refused that his portion of this life would sweep away his portion of religion, or that his fortune would make him lag behind the caravan of belief or the reward of Paradise. He (may Allah be pleased with him) would generously his fortune and feel satisfied15. Ibn ‘Awf was master of his money, not its slave. The proof of this was that he did not have trouble gathering it. He used to gather halaal money with much ease. Besides, he did not enjoy it alone, but together with his family, relative, brethren, and all his community. He was so generous and hospitable that he used to say: “The people of Al-Madiinah are partners of Ibn ‘Awf in his money. He lends to a third of them, pays the debts of a third, and strengthens his ties of kinship and gives away a third”16. Indeed, he became more charitable man when he realized that, these riches would not have made him comfortable or happy if they did not make him capable of adhering to his 14 - Khaalid, Muhammad Khaalid: Men around the Messenger, p 371. - Ibid, p 369. 16 - Ibid, p 372. and: ٣٥٩/١٤ جFآQP Jm اSرQ F|_ 15 6 religion and supporting his brethren. Nevertheless, he was always apprehensive of these riches. ﻣﻦ ﻧﻔﺲ ﻋﻦ: "ﻗﺎﻝ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ ﺍﷲ ﺻﻠﻰ ﺍﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ:ﺭﻭﻯ ﺍﻹﻣﺎﻡ ﻣﺴﻠﻢ ﻋﻦ ﺃﰊ ﻫﺮﻳﺮﺓ ﻗﺎﻝ ﻭﻣﻦ ﻳﺴﺮ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﻌﺴﺮ،ﻣﺆﻣﻦ ﻛﺮﺑﺔ ﻣﻦ ﻛﺮﺏ ﺍﻟﺪﻧﻴﺎ ﻧﻔﺲ ﺍﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ ﻛﺮﺑﺔ ﻣﻦ ﻛﺮﺏ ﻳﻮﻡ ﺍﻟﻘﻴﺎﻣﺔ ﻭﺍﷲ ﰲ ﻋﻮﻥ، ﻭﻣﻦ ﺳﺘﺮ ﻣﺴﻠﻤﺎ ﺳﺘﺮﻩ ﺍﷲ ﰲ ﺍﻟﺪﻧﻴﺎ ﻭﺍﻵﺧﺮﺓ،ﻳﺴﺮ ﺍﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﰲ ﺍﻟﺪﻧﻴﺎ ﻭﺍﻵﺧﺮﺓ ﻭﻣﻦ ﺳﻠﻚ ﻃﺮﻳﻘﺎ ﻳﻠﺘﻤﺲ ﻓﻴﻪ ﻋﻠﻤﺎ ﺳﻬﻞ ﺍﷲ ﻟﻪ ﺑﻪ ﻃﺮﻳﻘﺎ ﺇﱃ،ﺍﻟﻌﺒﺪ ﻣﺎ ﻛﺎﻥ ﺍﻟﻌﺒﺪ ﰲ ﻋﻮﻥ ﺃﺧﻴﻪ ﻭﻳﺘﺪﺍﺭﺳﻮﻧﻪ ﺑﻴﻨﻬﻢ ﺇﻻ، ﻳﺘﻠﻮﻥ ﻛﺘﺎﺏ ﺍﷲ، ﻭﻣﺎ ﺍﺟﺘﻤﻊ ﻗﻮﻡ ﰲ ﺑﻴﺖ ﻣﻦ ﺑﻴﻮﺕ ﺍﷲ ﺗﻌﺎﱃ.ﺍﳉﻨﺔ ﻭﻣﻦ ﺑﻄﺄ. ﻭﺫﻛﺮﻫﻢ ﺍﷲ ﻓﻴﻤﻦ ﻋﻨﺪﻩ، ﻭﺣﻔﺘﻬﻢ ﺍﳌﻼﺋﻜﺔ، ﻭﻏﺸﻴﺘﻬﻢ ﺍﻟﺮﲪﺔ،ﻧﺰﻟﺖ ﻋﻠﻴﻬﻢ ﺍﻟﺴﻜﻴﻨﺔ .١٧"ﺑﻪ ﻋﻤﻠﻪ ﱂ ﻳﺴﺮﻉ ﺑﻪ ﻧﺴﺒﻪ ﻭﻣﻌﲎ ) ﻭﻣﻦ ﺑﻄﺄ ﺑﻪ ﻋﻤﻠﻪ ﱂ ﻳﺴﺮﻉ ﺑﻪ ﻧﺴﺒﻪ ( ﺃﻱ ﻣﻦ ﻛﺎﻥ ﻋﻤﻠﻪ ﻧﺎﻗﺼﺎ ﱂ ﻳﻠﺤﻘﻪ ﲟﺮﺗﺒﺔ .ﺃﺻﺤﺎﺏ ﺍﻷﻋﻤﺎﻝ ﻓﻴﻨﺒﻐﻲ ﺃﻥ ﻻ ﻳﺘﻜﻞ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺷﺮﻑ ﺍﻟﻨﺴﺐ ﻭﻓﻀﻴﻠﺔ ﺍﻵﺑﺎﺀ ﻭﻳﻘﺼﺮ ﰲ ﺍﻟﻌﻤﻞ Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the prophet (Allah’s blessing and peace be upon him) had said: “Whoever banishes a grief of a believer out of the underworld grieves, God will relive him from one of grieves of the Resurrection Day. And whoever facilitates the affairs of an insolvent man, God will make things feasible for him in the Underworld and the Hereafter; and that who shields the faults of a Muslim, God will close his faults in the life and Hereafter. God will continue to help the servant as long as he aids his brother. Whoever shoulders a way searching for knowledge, God will reward him for that by making his way to Paradise easy. Whenever a group of people gather in a house of God’s (a Mosque) reciting God’s Book and considering it carefully among each other, tranquility will descend on them, mercy will cover them, the angels will surround them, and God will mention them in the presence of those who are near Him. And that whose deeds decelerate him (they are not so good), this parentage will not accelerate him”. Sahiih Muslim. What we can benefit from ‘Abdi Ar-Rahman Bn ‘Awf’s story? The advantage, which we can gain from this case study of Abdi Ar-Rahman’s entrepreneurship and his success in small business management are: Firstly: the virtues of self-esteem and its importance for the personal successes and community development. As I had mentioned, he was hard working, with the highly selfesteems character and he was very confidence by his ability in the business as will as the .(٢٦٩٩) ٣٨ y رNL .٢٠٧٤/٤[وي جqMح اFUm ،y_ T{x -17 7 survival behaviors, he refused the offers of the handout wealth – to became very rich in one hour and take over of the wife from his brother- rather then taken from the government, who can refuse like this offers?! Sahiih Al-Bukhari. : ﻗﺎﻝ ﺭﺳﻮﻝ ﺍﷲ ﺻﻠﻰ ﺍﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﻭﺳﻠﻢ: ﻋﻦ ﻫﺸﺎﻡ ﺑﻦ ﻋﺮﻭﺓ ﻋﻦ ﺃﺑﻴﻪ ﻋﻦ ﺟﺪﻩ ﻗﺎﻝ،ﻭﰲ ﺳﻨﻦ ﺍﺑﻦ ﻣﺎﺟﻪ "ﻷﻥ ﻳﺄﺧﺬ ﺃﺣﺪﻛﻢ ﺃﺣﺒﻠﻪ ﻓﻴﺄﰐ ﺍﳉﺒﻞ ﻓﻴﺠﺊ ﲝﺰﻣﺔ ﺣﻄﺐ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻇﻬﺮﻩ ﻓﻴﺒﻴﻌﻬﺎ ﻓﻴﺴﺘﻐﲎ ﺑﺜﻤﻨﻬﺎ ﺧﲑ ﻟﻪ ﻣﻦ ﺃﻥ .١٩" ﺃﻋﻄﻮﻩ ﺃﻭﻣﻨﻌﻮﻩ.ﻳﺴﺄﻝ ﺍﻟﻨﺎﺱ . ﺻﺤﻴﺢ:ﻗﺎﻝ ﺍﻟﺸﻴﺦ ﺍﻷﻟﺒﺎﱐ Ibn Majah reported that, the Messenger of Allah (BPUH) had said: “If one of you takes his ropes, goes to a mountain, fetches a bundle of firewood on his back, sells it, than by its money no need begging that will be better for him than begging from people, awaiting whether they give him or refuse” Sunan Ibn Majah. Many people today are depending on their families, parentage or ethnics, and the governments or cherty organizations for their lives and their future, education or even marriages and daily lives! But Abdi Ar-Rahman said: “I did not need for that, Allah blesses your family and your money. Show me the way to the market” ( ﻻ ﺣﺎﺟﺔ ﱄ ﰲ ﺫﻟﻚ )ﻫﻞ ﻣﻦ ﺳﻮﻕ ﻓﻴﻪ ﲡﺎﺭﺓ؟, because he did not want to be dependence on the others, therefore, he went to the market strictly and he returned home at evening with profits from the transactions he made in the day. Obviously, if everyone of the community has this self-esteem they will be successful in their lives, and eventually their success will be the success of the community and its development. .١٩٦٦ y رNL ،ريQOM اT{x -18 .١٨٣٦ y رNL ،©¤Q_ Jm اJq\ -19 8 Secondly: The major benefit, which we can gain from this story, is that, the important of the small business management and entrepreneurship’s approaches to the personal successes and community development. If Abdi Ar-Rahman Bn ‘Awf accept the handout cash, which S’ad offer to him, may make him careless, unwisely used his wealth because he got it easily, and eventually may he will be the poorest man. Perhaps, may S’ad also loses his wealth, and if the situation continues like that, may eventually become all community disaster situations. Therefore, governments, the authorities, and community leaders must encourages the community in the entrepreneurship’s approaches as well as the small business management behaviors, rather then to give them daily foods, they should provides all sorts to those wanting to develop their small businesses seeking the community developments through this tactics. Thirdly: in addition, the most important benefit, which we can learn also from this story, is that, the responsibility of the Muslim businessmen as well as the ways, which they should seek the wealth through it. Muslim businessmen must rails, that he has unethical and religious obligatory when he making business, not allowed him trouble gathering of the money, not corruption transactions, under table money to get nude contracts. He must use to gather halaal money only, therefore, in lieu of that; he will get a Baraka from Allah. In addition, Muslim businessman must be master of his money, not its slave; he must know the ethical and religious responsibility on him to his community. Abdi Ar-Rahman bn ‘Awf is the best admirable man in this subject, he was master of his money, as well as he did not have trouble gathering his wealth, and he used to gather halaal money with much ease. Besides, he did not enjoy it alone, but together with his family, relatives, brethren, and all his community. He was so generous and hospitable that he used to say: “The people of Al-Madiinah are partners of Ibn ‘Awf in his money. He lends to a third of them, pays the debts of a third, and strengthens his ties of kinship and gives away a third”. And that was completely with laid of the noble Messenger’s guidance as saying: ﻭﻣﻦ،"ﻣﻦ ﻧﻔﺲ ﻋﻦ ﻣﺆﻣﻦ ﻛﺮﺑﺔ ﻣﻦ ﻛﺮﺏ ﺍﻟﺪﻧﻴﺎ ﻧﻔﺲ ﺍﷲ ﻋﻨﻪ ﻛﺮﺑﺔ ﻣﻦ ﻛﺮﺏ ﻳﻮﻡ ﺍﻟﻘﻴﺎﻣﺔ ، ﻭﻣﻦ ﺳﺘﺮ ﻣﺴﻠﻤﺎ ﺳﺘﺮﻩ ﺍﷲ ﰲ ﺍﻟﺪﻧﻴﺎ ﻭﺍﻵﺧﺮﺓ،ﻳﺴﺮ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﻌﺴﺮ ﻳﺴﺮ ﺍﷲ ﻋﻠﻴﻪ ﰲ ﺍﻟﺪﻧﻴﺎ ﻭﺍﻵﺧﺮﺓ "ﻭﺍﷲ ﰲ ﻋﻮﻥ ﺍﻟﻌﺒﺪ ﻣﺎ ﻛﺎﻥ ﺍﻟﻌﺒﺪ ﰲ ﻋﻮﻥ ﺃﺧﻴﻪ “Whoever banishes a grief of a believer out of the underworld grieves, God will relive him from one of grieves of the Resurrection Day. And whoever facilitates the affairs of an insolvent man, God will make things feasible for him in the Underworld and the Hereafter; and that who shields the faults of a Muslim, God will close his faults in the life and Hereafter. God will continue to help the servant as long as he aids his brother” 9 Conclusion: With conclusion of this study, I must say that Abdi Ar-Rahman bn ‘Awf (my Allah pleas with him) is the best admirable man in the entrepreneurship and small businesses managements; in fact he was the most successful entrepreneur man. 1- Admirably; the way which he started his businesses by small milk and cheese only, with the highly self-esteems character (ﺍﻟﺴﻮﻕ ﺩﻟﻮﱐ ﻋﻠﻰ show me the market), not dependence on the others, as well as he did not have trouble gathering his wealth, not nude transactions, but he used to gather only halaal money with much ease. 2- Admirably; his ability in small businesses managements until he became the most wealth man in Madina society, (ﻓﻀﺔ ﻓﻠﻘﺪ ﺭﺃﻳﺘﲏ ﻭﻟﻮ ﺭﻓﻌﺖ ﺣﺠﺮﺍ ﺭﺟﻮﺕ ﺃﻥ ﺃﺻﻴﺐ ﲢﺘﻪ ﺫﻫﺒﺎ ﺃﻭ Indeed you see me; I hope if I lift up a stone, I will find silver and gold under it!). 33- Admirably; the way he was master of his money not slave, he did not enjoy it alone, but together with his family, relatives, brethren, and all his community. He was so generous and hospitable that he used to say: “The people of Al-Madiinah are partners of Ibn ‘Awf in his money. He lends to a third of them, pays the debts of a third, and strengthens his ties of kinship and gives away a third”. 4- Indeed this story of the greet companion (Sahabi) is highly admirable to find out the virtues of self-esteem and its importance for the personal successes and community development. 10
